Penn Manor at Hempfield

On October 18th, 2019, the Penn Manor Comets faced the Hempfield Spartans. The first quarter began with a touchdown by Hempfield in the first two minutes of the game. With the extra point good, the beginning score was 7-0. After Penn Manor received the ball, they made two hand offs to junior Isaiah Stoltzfus and senior Josh Gibson. Hempfield regained control of the ball, but quickly followed with a flag for a block on the back.

Hempfield got another touchdown ran by Tanner Hess with 5:23 left in the quarter. With no extra point, the score was 13-0. The first quarter concluded with an eleven yard run and seventeen yard catch by Gibson which gave the comets a first down.

As the second quarter commenced, the score was 13-0. Even though Penn Manor started with the ball, it was quickly turned over to Hempfield. Penn Manor’s senior Nick Baker had an impressive tackle on Hempfield, but Hempfield had a successful field goal with 8:52 left in the game. With the score 16-0, the comets got control of the ball.

When Hempfield punted the ball to Penn Manor, senior Joel Martinez received the ball and ran to the 21 yard line. Even though Penn Manor had a completed pass to senior Aaron Gale and hand off to Gibson, the comets did not receive the first down.

Soon into Hempfield getting control of the ball again, they received a flag for an illegal shift. After this, Hempfield made an impressive play by running the ball to the 31 yard line. The play was stopped by PM senior Logan Legenstein.

Once Penn Manor received the ball, Gibson had a carry and he ran the ball to the 31 yard line. Gibson followed this play with another impressive move of running the ball to the 20 yard line getting Penn Manor the first down. From this point, junior QB Luke Braas attempted to throw the ball into the endzone from the 20 yard line, but the pass was incomplete.

Josh Gibson got Penn Manor the touchdown by running the ball into the endzone with 1:44 left in the quarter. Penn Manor failed the attempt for a two point conversion, but a flag on Hempfield gave the comets another chance. With the second conversion failed, the score was 6-16.

After Hempfield got the ball back, a flag was quickly called on Penn Manor. With only a minute left in the game, junior Max Jesberger sacked the Hempfield quarterback and Hempfield received another flag for holding. In the last few seconds of the game, Hempfield scored another touchdown with an extra point. The first half of the game ended with the score of 6-23.

The second half of the game began with the comet’s possession of the ball. After a hand off to Stoltzfus, Hempfield gained control of the ball. Even though Hempfield’s play was stopped by Baker’s tackle, Hempfield attempted a field goal. The field goal was no good and Hempfield received a personal foul.

With the ball on first and ten for Penn Manor, Gibson received the hand off. After another flag on PM for a false start, Hempfield intercepted the ball with 6:33 left in the quarter. Hempfield quickly got another touchdown with six minutes left in the quarter. With a successful extra point, the score was 30-6.

Penn Manor got the ball back for the next play, but they didn’t keep control of it for long. After a hand off to Stoltzfus and incomplete pass to Legenstein failing to get the first down, Hempfield got the ball back. The quarter ended with tackles by PM’s junior Ben Weaver and Legenstein.

The fourth quarter of the game began with comet’s possession of the ball. After a complete pass to Gibson, Hempfield received another flag for a false start. Stoltzfus performed an impressive play by running the ball to first and goal. After an incomplete pass, Gibson ran the ball into the endzone for another comet touchdown. With no extra point, the score was 12-30.

In the last leg of the quarter, PM senior Jared Musser stopped Hempfield’s play of the ball and Hempfield received another flag for a false start. The rest of the quarter went by uneventful with an end score of 12-30.

In the 2018 football schedule, the Penn Manor Comets lost to Hempfield 49-14. Even though this year brought another loss, the comets showed significant improvement against their opponent. The next Penn Manor game will be held at Warwick High School at 7 on October 25, 2019.
