The Penns Valley Rams opened the 2019 season with a huge victory over the Fairfield Knights 77-0, in which the offense couldn’t be stopped as well as a stellar performance from the Rams defense. Senior quarterback Aaron Tobias was the leader of the night, he threw for 247 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Rams defense was the biggest key of the game as Fairfield did not have a play that went over 10 yards the entire game including 3 drives back to back that resulted in turnovers as well as a pick 6 late in the game.

The first quarter started very well for the Rams offense. The first drive of the game they took the ball down the field in 3 plays. On a first down from the 20-yard line senior quarterback, Aaron Tobias found junior receiver Stephen Ripka for a 20-yard touchdown putting the Rams up 7-0 with 10:45 left in the first quarter. The following drive after a Fairfield punt Tobias found Ripka for a 53-yard score putting the Rams up 14-0 with 7:44 to go in the first. To close out the first quarter Tobias found fellow senior tight end Logan Snyder for a 1-yard touchdown putting the Rams up 21-0 going into the second quarter.

To start the second quarter the Rams defense continued to dominate the Fairfield Knights. The Rams defense would stuff the run game and hurry the quarterback for all passing attempts. Just like the first Tobias would dominate the second quarter adding 4 touchdowns. The first score came just over a minute and a half into the second quarter as Tobias tossed a shovel pass to junior receiver Gage Ripka for a 1-yard touchdown putting the Rams up 28-0. Later in the quarter, Tobias hit Snyder on a dump-off pass for a 6-yard touchdown with 9:41 to go in the second quarter putting the Rams up 35-0. The Rams defense caused a 3 and out giving the Rams the ball on their own 43-yard line and 4 plays later Tobias hit Senior receiver Austin Fisher for a 27-yard touchdown with 6:35 left to go putting the Rams up 42-0. The Knights got the ball back and after 3 plays were forced to punt. When attempting the punt junior Aiden Brinker came running through and blocked the kick for the Rams. This gave a short field for the offense as they started from the 28-yard line. 3 plays later junior running back Colton Winkelblech took the ball into the endzone from 1 yard out, putting the Rams up 48-0 with 2:32 to go in the half. To finish the half Tobias added his 4th touchdown as he hit Fisher for the second time from 5 yards out. This would be the final play of the first half giving the Rams a commanding lead going into the half with a score of 55-0.

The second half was very similar to the first in Penns Valley’s defense dominated the line of scrimmage. The first 3 drives for the Fairfield Knights in the second half resulted in turnovers. The third quarter did not have any scoring drives but did have a lot of possession changes through turnovers and punts. The first points of the second half came 10 seconds into the 4th quarter when sophomore quarterback Rylee Brungart took the ball 13 yards to the house. This put the Rams up 63-0 with 11:50 to go in the 4th quarter. The Rams would score 2 more times in the game to finish. The first touchdown was a 17-yard touchdown from sophomore Tanner Ilgen. And finally, senior Wyatt Shawver took an interception 40 yards to the house to make the final score 77-0.

The Penns Valley Rams will travel to Clearfield next Friday kickoff at 7. When asking senior quarterback Aaron Tobias about the game as well as the game next week, he said “ it’s a good start, we know where we need to be but we’re not quite there yet we know what we have to work on. We need a good practice next week to come out strong.” Fairfield will play another tough Mt. League team in the Bishop Carroll Huskies next week.
