Before the senior night game started between the Buffalos of Newport and the Susquenita Blackhawks, Newport head coach Todd Rothermel said his quarterback, Andrew Bates, would be one to watch. He wasn’t wrong. Bates opened up the game with a 30 yard fumble return for a score on the second play, then after the Buffalo defense forced a punt, hit the hole in the center of the line and raced 85 yards for another. Newport held on for a 20-6 win. “That’s how you start a football game” said Rothermel.

Susquenita struggled with turnovers in the first half, giving up the ball two more times and didn’t get on the board until there was just over a minute left in the half. Two of those scores led to points for Newport. After recovering the third Newport fumble, Bates found Will Davis down the sideline for a 19 yard score. Adam Reich hauled in the 2 point pass to give the visitors a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
“That’s too good of a team to spot 20 points before we start playing offense” said Susquenita head coach Scott Acri. “We settled in defensively. We got the ball deep a couple times but we just didn’t capitalize. You turn the ball over six times you’re going to struggle.”
The Blackhawks got on the board 13 play, 58 yard drive capped off by a 3 yard run from Austin Kenney. Kenney was the workhorse for Susquenita, carrying the ball 26 times for 145 yards.

Neither team found the endzone in the second half. Newport gave up the ball twice but the Blackhawks weren’t able to capitalize.
“We have to understand how to put people away and that’s going to come from maturity” said Rothermel of his teams second half struggles. “We have some young linemen and quarterback that made his second start ever.”
Newport travels to James Buchanan next week while Susquenita will look to bounce back at Upper Dauphin.
