YORK, PA – Red Lion broke their 0-2 run Friday night with a 38-14 win over York Suburban.
Red Lion dominated the first half, which started with a 65-yard QB keeper for a touchdown by Mason Hollingshead. The Lions try the 2-point conversion and are successful off a run by Octavius Thompson, making it 8-0 with 10:18 left in the first quarter. Once they got the ball back, the Trojans were quickly stopped by Red Lion’s defense, led by Elon University commit Sean Tanner, who was able to overpower the Trojan’s offensive line. The Lions would score one more time in the first quarter when Mason Hollingshead ran it 3 yards to the endzone. They were able to successfully convert on the 2-point again, making it 16-0.
Red Lion was showing no signs of stopping going into the second quarter, and following a York Suburban fumble recovered by Red Lion, Sophomore QB Mason Platts ran it 4 yards for the score. He then threw a pass to Zyaire Selby for the 2-point conversion, which made it 22-0. 2 minutes later, Mason Hollingshead got his third touchdown with a pass to Zyaire Selby, who ran 55 yards to the endzone. He would be successful on the conversion again, putting the Lions’ lead to 30. The Lions were still not done scoring yet, and Zyaire Selby was able to run it 20 yards to the back of the endzone, making it 38-0 with 2:30 left in the first half. After an unsuccessful offensive drive by the Trojans, which saw Red Lion’s Wyatt Paschke get ejected for a dangerous hit to the head, the first half ended at 38-0.
York Suburban found more success in the second half, although Red Lion had taken out their starters at this point, and Taza Sweeny was able to score off a 20-yard carry. Jakey Royer made the PAT, finally putting the Trojans on the board 38-7. The third quarter passed quickly with a running clock, and the Trojans’ defense had multiple stops against Red Lion. In the fourth quarter, Jovonny Ward ran it 23 yards for the last touchdown of the game, ending it at 38-14.
With the win, Red Lion is now 1-2, while York Suburban falls to 0-3. Next week Red Lion plays away at Susquehannock, and York Suburban travels to West York for a Division 2 rivalry.
