State College Blasts Chambersburg on Homecoming Weekend

It was a celebratory evening all around for State College, as it overcame a slow first quarter to sprint past Chambersburg, 40-0. Led by a six-touchdown performance from sophomore quarterback Connor Kulka, the Little Lions peppered the Chambersburg secondary all night in front of a packed whiteout crowd for homecoming at Memorial Field.

The only score of the first quarter was also the only rushing score of the game. After a clinical first drive, Kulka punched it in with a quarterback sneak from the one to put State High up 7-0 with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

Chambersburg then had its most promising drive of the game, but State High junior AJ Fry began his huge night with an interception, giving the Little Lions the ball back at their own 12. State College plodded down the field, and junior Shane Markowski made his first mark on the game with a 37-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead with 9:25 to play in the second quarter.

The fireworks began later in the second quarter. A fourth down stop by seniors Jake Lukac and Trayce Brennan set up fellow senior Hank Lustig’s first of three receiving touchdowns, a 48-yarder on the first play of the drive.

It was the very same story on the next possession. A three and out for the Trojans led to a deep touchdown pass from Kulka to Lustig on the first play of the Little Lions’ drive. Lustig’s scores brought the lead up to 24-0, and it stayed that way through Rowan Walker’s half-ending interception.

Senior captain Luke Milito compared the back to back connections from Kulka to Lustig to the huge plays that littered Ty Salazer’s State High career.

“Those back to back drives that were one play each, that was insane,” Milito said. “That was like last year throwing up to Ty [Salazer], it was crazy, just those back to back drives, it was fun.”

The first possession of the second half granted another Chambersburg turnover on downs after sophomore quarterback Cam Green’s pass fell harmlessly to the ground on fourth down. Kulka and Lustig capitalized on the turnover, continuing their spectacular nights with a nine-yard touchdown connection to extend the lead to 31-0.

Lustig complimented everyone around him after his best performance of the season.

“The offense did a great job, we did a great job preparing for this week, coach drew it up, everyone did their job, and everyone else got me open,” he said. “I just had to make the easy job of the catch.”

Another Markowski 37-yarder and a Michael Yourey interception later, Kulka delivered the dagger. He hit Fry deep over the middle of the field, and the two-way star took it 69 yards into the end zone to take a 40-0 lead with under eight minutes to play, and that was all she wrote.

Kulka analyzed the top-tier performance after the game.

“Seeing the defense, they were in a lot of cover three and cover zero, so we threw the ball downfield a lot more than we planned on, but props to Hank [Lustig], three touchdowns, breaking out of a little slump there and getting it going. AJ [Fry] too, couple called back, but a solid game overall,” he said.

Kulka and Lustig both gave credit to the defense after Chambersburg never really threatened the end zone once all night.

“It’s awesome, that’s exactly what we were going for, just to let up no points is exactly what we wanted, and it’s awesome to get that result,” Lustig said.

In his postgame talk to the team, State College Head Coach Matt Lintal shouted out everyone who had a hand in the victory, from the packed students section, to the JV team, to Kulka’s six touchdowns. Lintal then explained that next week’s matchup with Central Dauphin is one that he’s had circled all year, and the teams’ respective records shouldn’t be an indicator of how the game will go.

Kulka said, “This is my first CD game, so we’ll see how it goes. Lot of chippiness last year, hopefully it doesn’t get to that extent, but hopefully we’ll get out of there with a dub.”

As the Little Lions go to war with Central Dauphin, the Trojans are back on the road to take on Cedar Cliff.
