YORK, PA – York Suburban took on Susquehannock on a foggy Friday night between two YAIAA division two teams.
The first quarter was a battle between both defenses, who were able to stop each other’s drives the entire quarter. At the end of the quarter it was still scoreless, but not for long.
York Suburban had the ball starting the second quarter, but RB Taza Sweeney threw an interception to Susquehannock’s Nicholas Burns on a trick play intended for Rylan Bratton, giving the Warriors the ball. Susquehannock capitalized on the interception when Trevor Odegaard ran the ball 2 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good, putting the Warriors up 7-0 with around 8 minutes left in the half. The Trojans did not find much more success on the offensive side of the ball for the rest of the first half. At halftime, the score was 7-0 Susquehannock.
The third quarter followed the same script, with both defenses stopping the struggling offenses. But, at 3 minutes left in the third, Joshua Pencunes scrambled and ran 5 yards into the endzone for a touchdown, putting them up 14-0.
It was starting to look like York Suburban wouldn’t be able to put any points on the board, but, in the fourth quarter now, Elisha Dennis caught a pass from Rylan Bratton and ran it 34 yards for their first points of the game. However, just 2 minutes later, Joshua Pencunes found a gap and ran it 68 yards for his second touchdown of the game. With only 5 minutes left in the game, it was starting to get desperate for the Trojans.
A layer of fog moved over the field with around 3 minutes left, but this did not stop Gehret Gentzyle from scoring on a 35-yard rushing play to make it 21-14. On the kickoff the Trojans tried a squib kick, however, the refs blew it dead too soon, resulting in a re-kick. They tried the same kick but were not able to come down on it that time. The Warriors took a knee to end the game with a final score of 21-14.
The Trojans travel to Kennard-Dale next Friday, while Susquehannock will travel to Eastern York next Friday.
