Trinity didn’t get off to a good start in their District 3 class 3A semifinal game with Schuylkill Valley. But as they say, it isn’t how you start, it’s how you finish. The Shamrocks overcame two turnovers that led to scores along with several very untimely penalties to get a 20-17 overtime win and advance to the title game against Bermudian Springs next week.
“These guys overcame adversity all year and played as a family” said Trinity head coach Kevin Yarnevich. “Amil Way played great and shut down is one of the best corners in the area. He helped shut down a very good offense and our running back (Christian Joy) got hurt but was able to come back and get us the win”.
The Shamrocks got off to a rough start. Getting the ball first, they committed three straight false start penalties. They called time out after the third one and that seemed to do the trick. Joy hit Marcus Yeager for a 25 yard gain then Jacob Ness scrambled and dashed away for a 32 yard score to give Trinity a 7-0 lead with 9:32 left in the first quarter.

That’s where it stayed until late in the second quarter. Both teams struggled to move the ball. Then the Panthers caught a break. After pinning the Shamrocks deep with a punt that put the ball on the Trinity 21, the snap from center sailed over Boyers head. Logan Cammauf scooped the ball up and scored from 15 yards out to tie the score at 7 with 2:40 left in the first half.

Trinity wasted no time in taking the lead back. It took just one play. Aided by a facemask penalty that put the ball on the Panther 42, Boyer dropped back and hit Amil Way down the sideline for the 42 yard score to give Trinity a 14-7 advantage heading into the locker room.

To open the second half, Trinity’s defense held the Panthers to a punt. On first down Ness took off for a nice gain but lost the ball and Cooper Hohenadel recovered the loose rock giving Schuylkill Valley the ball on the Trinity 28. A couple plays later Logan Nawrocki hit Lucas Spotts for a 15 yard td to tie the game at 14 with 7:33 left in the third quarter.

The Panthers actually had a chance to take the lead on their next possession but a field goal attempt doinked off the goal post. Trinity also had a chance to end the game late in the fourth quarter. Starting at their own 13, Boyer masterfully moved the Shamrocks downfield getting Trinity all the way to the Panther 3 but on fourth down with 1:13 left they committed a penalty putting the ball on the 8. They too tried a field goal that came up well short.
In overtime the Panthers got the ball first and scored on a field goal to take a 17-14 lead. Another untimely penalty moved the ball to the 16 and on the next play Boyer found Joy for the game winner.

“They just loaded the box. That made it tough” said Boyer. “On that winning play Christian actually gonna run straight up the seam. He didn’t do that but I saw him cutting across and trusted him to take the ball in.”
