Twin Valley Raiders Win 1st District 3 4A Championship
Coach Brett Myers and his Raiders are champions for the first time in the programs 29 yr history, they rode their ground game to a dominant 2nd half performance and the defense shut out Susquehanna Twp in the 2nd half for a 41-21 victory. After trailing 21-20 at the half, Twin Valley went to their bread and butter. Grinding it out on the ground behind their front five that averages 279lbs, and tough hard nose runners like drew Engle who added 3 more touchdowns and almost 300yds to his record setting career numbers of 3690yds and 57tds coming into the game. RB Lucas Myers and sophomore QB Maverik Foster put their mark on the game as well. Myers added a 5yd dash to the endzone, Foster threw 45yds to WR Ben Grundy and ran for a TD.
Sounds easy, but it wasn’t Susquehanna Twp won the toss and elected to receive, they stated at their own 29yd line and got their ground game going behind senior QB Torin Evans and senior RB Xavier Rivera, who ran 61yds for a touchdown at 9:51 in the 1st quarter and Hanna led 7-0.
The Raiders started the drive on their own 25yd line and it did not take long till they were 1st and goal at the 1yd line and after loosing a yard, Drew Engle ran it in from the 2yd line at 7:06 in the 1st quarter and that tied it up at 7-7.
The Indians next drive never materialized and that gave the Raiders great field position and Lucas Myers behind that massive oline ran it in on 2nd and goal from the 5yd line at 4:55 in the 1st quarter and led 14-7.
Susquehanna Twp had good field position to start at their own 31yd line, but again gained no traction was forced to punt, a ruffing the passer call gave them new life and were able to make into Raider territory before Grant Moser intercepted a Torin Evans pass. Twin Valley got the ball at their own 42yd line, but went three and out. And here we go Torin Evans put together a 77yd drive that ended with Evans taking in from 20yds out at 8:33 in the 2nd quarter, Indians tie the score at 14-14.
An interception by James Alexy ended a drive by Hanna that had made it into Raider territory. But starting at their own 11yd line and running out of gas at the 39yd line punted to the Indians. And on the 3rd play of the drive Torin Evans threw to Zi’khere Leaks for 67yds and the score. With 42 seconds left Hanna led 21-14.
So with less than a minute left in the half, the Raiders work horse Drew Engle got his 2nd touchdown of the night, but a missed PAT and the score was 21-20 with 2o seconds left in the half. And that was the halftime score 21-20, with the Raiders set to receive to start the 2nd half.
The 2nd half was all Twin Valley, they scored 3 more times. First 45yds Foster to Grundy, then Foster ran one for 24yds and finally Drew Engle got his 3rd touchdown of the night 32yds. The defense did their part and shut out Hanna, Raiders win 41-21 and are the District 3 4A Champions, 13-0 and move on the semifinals against Aliquippa.
Credit Susquehanna Twp and Coach Joe Headen and the Indians they came into the game ready for a fight, but in the end they had no answer for the ground attack of the Raiders and a couple of key turnovers in the 1st half gave the momentum to Twin Valley at the end of the 1st half and they never looked back.
