A 42-14 win for Warwick over Ephrata.

In a rivalry game between Warwick and Ephrata, Warwick was able to win their 15th in a row in the series with a commanding 42-14 win. This was the 91st meeting between the schools in which they play for the Male trophy, which is named for former coach George Male who spent time on each of their sidelines as head coach. Warwick was able to run the ball well behind Christian Royer (127 yards rushing) and the passing of Jack Reed (206 yards) to pace a balanced attack for Warwick. Coach Bob Locker on the win “Yeah we talk about the Male Trophy because it is a rivalry game and we are neighbors and tonight it was really important for us to get the win and get to 2-1, simple as that”. QB Jack Reed on the win “It feels great we didn’t want to be the team to lose that trophy”.

Ephrata had 6 turnovers on the night, including the 1st snap from center when hand-off was muffled and Warwick got the ball inside the Ephrata 5, which lead to a 1-yard rushing touchdown for Christian Royer, his 1st of 3 on the night. Then later in the 1st Quarter Andrew McClune scooped up a fumble by Ephrata QB Hunter Mortimer and raced in from 20 yards out. Suddenly Warwick had a 14-0 lead.

Ephrata then had the best drive of the night for them and scored on a 4th and 8. Hunter Mortimer connected with Elijah Knowles for a passing Touchdown. A 2 point conversation run by Andrew Weidman cut the lead to 14-8. Warwick responded with two long touchdown drives capped off by two rushing touchdowns by Colin Winters. Warwick took a commanding 28-8 lead into the half.

In the second half, Warwick continued the offense success and scored two more touchdowns, and had several long drives. They were able to run behind their offensive line and bruising running back random of Christian Royer and Colin Winters. Locker on the second half “We wore on them. Christian (Royer) said coach we can pound it on them. If you can run the ball effectively you set up a lot of things for your offense”. QB Jack Reed on his RB Royer “It is great it takes a lot off my shoulders, and it is nice watching him run the ball”. Read on the performance of the offensive line “They were great tonight, made it easy to win”.

One of the keys to the evening for Warwick was the quick passing game for them. Several times Reed was able to find his Wide Receivers for quick-outs, hitches, and other routes. Coach Locker credited their off-season program for the success.  “Sometimes people think we are nuts when it’s January and 25 degrees out and we are running our base patterns, we talk about it if you do it often enough when it really matters it be correct”. Reed on work he did with the wide receivers in the off-season “We lost a lot of wide receivers last year, but we put in a lot of hard work in the off-season with this group of WRs. Before practices, in the winter and the spring”.

In defeat, Andrew Wiedman was really good at RB. He had a career-high of 187 yards and had several long runs. Wiedman is a player to watch the rest of the year in section three. He was very impressive in defeat.

Wiedman off and running

Finally, Coach Lockers team had a setback last week when they lost to a good Central Dauphin East team. Locker was happy to get the win and keep the Male Trophy another year. Locker on the win “Coming off of the last week, it was good for us to play a good football game and get the win”.
