WYOMISSING- The Spartans of Wyomissing won their first and only PIAA State 2A Football Championship back in 2012. Come Friday afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium they will get a shot a capturing their second, this time in 3A as they face Central Valley at 3:30pm, after rolling to 44-14 win over District 4 Danville Ironmen Saturday afternoon.

Wyomissing scored on seven consecutive drives in the contest to jump out to a 37-7 halftime lead and put the game into the mercy rule early in the third quarter.

Danville’s opening drive looked promising as quarterback KJ Riley connected for a 50 yard pass to Carson Persing on the first play from scrimmage, but then the Spartan defense stiffened and stuffed a Ironmen attempt to convert a 4th and 1 at the Wyomissing seven. The Spartans then went on a 14 play 93 yard drive, all via the ground game capped off by Jordan Auman 7 yard run to give the home team a 7-0 lead with 2:50 left in the opening quarter.

Spartan running back Jason Gartner then made it 14-0 with a 4 yard run with 8:05 left in the half. Danville answered right back on their next possession with a 79 yard pass from Riley to Persing to cut the lead at 14-7.

Danville’s momentum was quickly subdued as Auman returned the kickoff 60 yards to the Danville 30 setting up a Aiden Cirulli 27 yard field goal to make it 17-7 at the 5:18 mark.

The half was to close out with the Spartans reeling off three scores in the last four minutes. A 46 yard pass from quarterback Zach Zechman to Darren Brunner. A Riley fumble gave the Spartans the ball back and they took advantage with a 29 yard pass from Zechman to Auman. Another Danville turnover on a screen pass was picked off by Jack Feightner setting up the home team at the Ironmen 30 with 46 seconds left. Amory Thompson made a remarkable one-handed catch in the back of the end zone from 12 yards out with 9 ticks left on the clock.

Gartner made the score 44-7 early in the third quarter with a five yard score on the opening drive of the half capping off a ten play 58 yard drive.

Wyomissing chalked up over 450 yards in offense including Zechman throwing for 190 yards on 11-of-12 passes and the three scores. Auman rushed for 67 yards on 11 tallies.

Danville managed to score one more time on a Riley pass from four yards out to complete the scoring.

“We have a veteran group of kids. This team made it to the state playoffs last year. They have a lot of experience. We kept our composure after that opening pass. We kept them out of the end zone. We did;t get rattled.” Wyomissing coach Rob Wolfrum stated.
