District 4 Showdown: Tigers Trounce Panthers

Southern’s Garcia scores 4 times in 61-0 win

Bloomsburg came into Southern’s stadium confident. After all, the Panthers and Tigers had identical 7-1 records entering the second to last week of the regular season.

By the end of the night, Southern more than sent out a public service announcement to the gridiron world — “We’re back.”

Southern doesn’t want the season to come to an end in November like last year when Troy knocked off a Tiger team riding a seven-consecutive PIAA championship winning streak, and a nine-year run of making the final with eight gold medals in the span.

Bloomsburg won the opening toss and took possession to start the game. Unfortunately for the Panthers, receiving kickoffs was something that they did all night inside of Tiger Stadium as Southern walloped them 61-0.

“The big key was how well our defensive front was able to control the line of scrimmage and contain the quarterback,” Tiger head coach Jim Roth said.

This was 64th meeting between the two programs and the 15th straight victory for Southern since the consecutive winning streak started in the 2009 playoffs.

If the playoff standings hold up in District 4 2A, this Columbia County meeting could occur again in three weeks.

“We kind of have to play with a chip on our shoulder now after the way last season ended. We have momentum now and we just have to keep it going,” said SCA defensive end Chase Williams after the Tigers made it an unpleasant night for Bloomsburg QB Wyatt Brosius.

Bloomsburg’s leader Mike Kogut stood in disbelief for much of the second half as his Panthers (7-2) got steamrolled by the host Tigers (8-1) on Jim Roth Field.

“I hope we can bounce back and regain focus. We lost focus early in this one and when that happens against a team like this, you see the result. We should be pretty motivated at home on our senior night now. Southern dominated us in this game tonight and that is something that we need to respond to. They handled us in every aspect,” Kogut said as his team closes out the regular season next against a Central Columbia team that hasn’t won a game in 2025.

Grady Garcia scored four touchdowns in the win. Three of those SCA touchdowns came on the ground and one via special teams.

“We wanted to come in showing that we are playing our best football of the season right now. I credit the offensive line for opening up the holes and the defense for getting us the ball in great field position,” said Garcia.

To cap off the dominant win, for a Tiger team that will remain at the top of the District 4 standings, senior John Quinton returned a touchdown 26 yards after intercepting a pass.

“Going into the game, we practiced against that play. We were aware that they had success on that screen play earlier in the season. I saw they let me go through, so I knew it was coming. I caught the ball and ran for the dickens,” Quinton said.

Southern moved the ball at will as they topped the 60-point mark in the middle of the third quarter for their largest victory margin since 2022. The Tigers rushed for 354 yards.

“We all came together and did well. We had a good practice all week and were prepared to play them. We went in with energy,” said SoCo offensive lineman Greg Fulmer.

In the District 4 standings, Bloomsburg should hold onto the four-spot barring a colossal collapse in their final regular season game against winless rival Central Columbia.

The Tigers are in first and can guarantee to stay there with a win in their finale at Shikellamy.

“This stretch was tough which we emphasized to the kids going into that Mifflinburg game a few weeks ago. The players responded since we talked about the importance of earning home games in the playoffs throughout. Now, we have one more hurdle to take down,” Roth said as his Tigers will now prepare against his alma-mater.
