Brosious leads Panthers to win
Bloomsburg wasted no time Friday night, striking early and often to take control in a 32-21 win over Shikellamy. Behind another strong showing from quarterback Wyatt Brosious, the Panthers improved to 7-1 on the season.
In the first quarter, Brosious connected with Shane Frey for a 12-yard touchdown, then found Jack Katulis for another touchdown to push the lead to 14-0. Even when penalties put Bloomsburg deep in its own territory, the team did not let up in the first quarter.
A fumble recovered by quarterback Brody Rebuck resulted in a 6-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Braves on the board at 14-7. Brosious responded just before halftime with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Panthers a 20-7 lead at the half.
The Braves came out in the third quarter ready to play, led by Rebuck’s efforts. He threw a 19-yard touchdown to Charlie Walter and later ran in another score from the 1-yard line, which brought Shikellamy within five points. Rebuck finished with 204 passing yards, three total touchdowns, and led an offense that gained 172 of its 237 passing yards after halftime.
Bloomsburg answered when it mattered most. Julius Serrano broke free for a 46-yard touchdown that sealed the win for the Panthers late in the fourth quarter.
“I think we did pretty good as a team, just a lot of mistakes in the first half,” quarterback Brody Rebuck said. “I think if we would have played how we did in the second half to start, it would have been a different game.”
Brosious finished 11-of-17 for 216 yards, throwing for three touchdowns, and rushed another 96 yards with a touchdown.
“We all did our jobs, and we stuck to the game plan. We watched a good amount of film, and it paid off,” Brosious said.
It was an extremely hard-fought game for both teams, with both quarterbacks making impressive plays and throwing some remarkable passes. Shikellamy will look to stay motivated this coming week with their record now 5-3, as they travel to Danville next Friday.
“They fought hard in the second half, and they have been doing that all year. These guys won’t quit, and I have no doubt in my mind about that,” said head coach Mike Hoover. “This loss hurts — it’ll hurt tonight, it’ll hurt all weekend — but they will come back Monday ready for week nine.”
The Panthers will now carry their 7-1 record into a major matchup next week against Southern Columbia.
