My view from the sidelines at the 20 yard line

As I pulled into the area near the Beaver Spring Fairgrounds I saw they were parking cars way out front of where I knew the Mustang field would be.  Made me say “wow! this game gonna be packed! Then as I turned the corner I saw it wasn’t the game all these people were coming to, it was the Fair…..which is located literally 30 yards from the sidelines of Midd-Wests field, separated only by a chain link fence.  Our background for the evening? The modified tracter pulls.  If you have never seen this event, they are extremely loud, jet engine loud. And powerful.  See following tweet:

The Olympians could have added an entry to that contest, 5-11, 208 pound CJ Selby.  The senior running back ran over, around, through and pulled Midd-West defenders all night long, amassing over 200 yards in the first half of a 41-0 Jim Thorpe win in front of a nice crowd last night. For the night, Selby carried the ball 23 times for 233 yards and 2 tds. “There was just effort all throught the team tonight, especially up front” said Selby of his night. “I had all my linemen working hard all night opening holes.”

Olympian quarterback Cavier Calcano also had himself a nice evening, throwing for three touchdowns.  “I was very impressed with the effort our kids put out tonight” said Olympian head coach Mark Rosenberger. “We talked about the long bus ride and all, our line came out and did their job on both sides of the ball, our offense comes down and scores on the first drive, special teams pins them at the 15 and our defense gets us the ball quick to set up a quick second score. A complete team effort tonight.”

Dom Madera had the first score, a 1 yard run, to get things rolling for Jim Thorpe. Then on the next series Calcano found Noah Snisky over the middle from 18 yards out and that quick Jim Thorpe had jumped out to a 14-0 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter. “Our game plan is always to run the ball and ball control” said Rosenberger. “Our line is a strong unit up front that allows that and our quarterback did a great job tonight of running our offence”.

Selby got his first score in the middle of the second quarter on a 29 yard run.

Calcano threw his second td pass to Dylan Dailey from 13 yards out. The point after failed but Jim Thorpe, much like the clouds of diesel and jet fuel smoke hovering over the field, were choking the life out of the Midd-West attack.

Selby closed out the scoring first half with a  23 yard run, Madera got the 2 pointer to make it a 35-0 lead.   Kendall Herron hauled in a short td pass to close out the scoring.

NOTE: The game ended early when Joe Rodriquez was injured and lay on the ground motionless.  They brought the ambulance onto the field and took him to Geisinger hospital.  Received word this morning that Josh was moving his toes and legs. No bones are broken and they are awaiting the results of an MRI.

Jim Thorpe has a huge battle next Friday with North Schuylkill, a come from behind winner over Mt Carmel last night while it doesn’t get any easier for Midd-West as they travel to Penns Valley to take on a very powerful 4-1 Rams.
