Bloomsburg’s Defense crushes Hughesville

The Bloomsburg Panthers delivered a dominant all-around performance Friday night, blanking the Hughesville Spartans 35-0 at Panther Stadium. It was a statement win for Bloomsburg, who controlled the game in every phase, piling up a total of 432 yards while holding the Spartans to just 73.

The Panthers set the tone early. On their first scoring drive, Jharee Moore-Stewart powered through the middle of the Spartans’ defense with 6:18 left in the first quarter. The two-point try game up short, but the early 6-0 lead only fueled the Bloomsburg offense even further.

The Spartans’ first few drives showed flashes of potential behind the quarterback Connor Anstadt, who tried to get things moving through short passes to Chase Fowler and Carson Stackhouse. Yet the Panthers’ defense, led by junior Shane Frey shut down all potential for a Spartans touchdown.

“I believe that we played together extremely well as a team, we trusted each other, and that is what led us to maintain so much strength.” Frey said, “Even though we held them to zero, we still made mistakes that we need to work on as a team and get fixed for the game next week.”

With 2:32 left in the second quarter, quarterback Wyatt Brosious found Krue Weadon on a 10-yard pass deep into the end zone. Moore-Stewart added the two-point run to make it 14-0 at the break.

Coming out of halftime the Panthers showed no signs of slowing down or letting up. Brosious connected with Julius Serrano on a touchdown pass at the 4:55 mark, and kicker Michael Masteller completed the extra point. Just three minutes later, Serrano made one of the biggest plays of the night, jumping up to intercept Anstadt’s pass and carrying it 66 yards for the touchdown. Another Masteller extra point was completed to push the score to 28-0 going into the game’s last quarter.

The final points of the game came midway through the final quarter when Senior Gabe Dube broke free for an 18-yard touchdown pass from Brosious with 6:22 remaining. Masteller’s final kick was good once more, finishing the score at 35-0.

Bloomsburg’s offense stayed balanced and efficient all night. Brosious completed 18 of his 29 passes for 220 yards, throwing two touchdown passes. Jack Katulis led all receivers with seven catches for 96 yards, while Wheadon had five catches for 51 and 6 points. Moore-Stewart added 46 receiving yards, and Serrano contributed and 27 yards with a touchdown.

“On offense we played a great game, one together, running and passing the ball.” Katulis said, “We started a bit slow, but after the second half we started to pick it up as a team, we won, and we are just going to keep moving forward and improving.”

The win moves Bloomsburg to a 6-1 record, continuing a strong stretch of football with a tough two upcoming games. Hughesville now 2-5 will look to regroup after being shut out for the second time this season.

The Panthers’ combination of efficiency, balance, and toughness on both sides of the ball proved too much for the Spartans. If this performance is any indication, Bloomsburg is starting to find its stride at just the right time.
