SCA won regular season finale

The final score of 42-14 didn’t paint the full picture for Southern Columbia in their dominant win over Shikellamy to close out the regular season.

The Tigers quite simply did what they wanted, when they wanted, however they wanted in Sunbury on Friday night.

“Whoever gets the ball, if we are scoring, we are happy to block and do our part. We had success passing the football as well. This past month we have been practicing harder and really trying to hype each other up. To close out the regular season this way heading into the playoffs is exactly what we wanted to do,” said Tiger junior Carter Madden who scored touchdowns on both of his carries in the victory.

As the fourth quarter clocked ticked down to zero, SCA senior captain Wes Barnes was the first person on the field to start the handshake line. The three-year starting fullback has been sidelined since week five with torn ligaments in his elbow.

Barnes, who has rushed for 2,599 yards in his career, is opting to skip out on surgery in hopes to try and help the Tigers on their quest to winning a sixth consecutive PIAA Championship.

“The guys that have stepped in during his absence have done what they needed to on both sides of the ball. Jack Beirmaas filled in and got better each week at fullback, and the combination of (Carter) Madden and (Louden) Murphy at the halfback spot have complimented (Braeden) Wisloski nicely,” said Southern head coach Jim Roth.

Roth and former Tiger standout Jerry Marks are being inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night. The ceremony in Reading will be monumental as the duo will become the first two individuals receiving the induction from the school.

In the first half, Roth’s squad was able to move the ball at will on offense and allowed just 24 yards on defense as the Tigers built a 35-0 lead at the break.

“I thought the starters came out and took care of business. They played hard to go into halftime with the game in check. Our primary concern this year has been our run defense, but we played very well in stopping the run against Shikellamy,” said Roth who graduated from Shikellamy in the mid-1970’s.

The Tigers have struggled to get their passing game going at times this season, but junior Blake Wise was a perfect 5 for 5 against the Braves.

His first pass went for a 45-yard touchdown to Braeden Wisloski to give SCA a 7-0 lead with 7:26 remaining in the opening quarter.

“I have a lot of confidence in myself. The game against Mount Carmel two weeks ago wasn’t a true showing of what my abilities are. I made a lot of mistakes in that one, so I am motivated to get a rematch with them in the district title,” Wise said.

The next four touchdowns were on the ground as Madden and Wisloski each scored twice.

Madden’s first carry went for a 37-yard score as he followed his offensive line up the gap. Wisloski then looked like he was shot out of a cannon on the following drive as the senior went 57 yards on his first attempt to close out the scoring in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, they each scored from short distance as the offensive line seems to be coming together nicely as the Tigers head into the postseason.

“Our offensive line played great. We have definitely progressed a lot since the beginning of the year. We are playing more as a unit,” said senior two-way lineman Chris Treshock. “The defensive line played great as well. We didn’t really allow anything on the ground.”

With the win and Troy’s loss to Canton, the Tigers weren’t able to jump past the Trojans. Instead, SCA enters the postseason as the three-seed and will host a familiar Line Mountain squad.

“We need to come out strong from the start. With Wes back, that should provide us with a mental advantage. He is one of our leaders,” said Roth.

The Tigers are looking to win an unprecedented 30th District 4 Championship in a 32-year span later in November.
