The last time these two teams met this year it was a low scoring game dominated by defense the was won by the Wildcats, 7-3. Tonight’s edition wasn’t much different. The Seals opened up the scoring and closed it with a 22 yard field to secure a 10-7 win at Selinsgrove. “We’ve had two doozies with these guys” said Selinsgrove head coach Derek Hicks. “In both games there were some little special teams things that played a part and tonight we were fortunate they went our way. Luckily for us Kyle (Ruhl) missed the first field goal attempt and kept his composure and drilled the second one.”
Neither team was able to muster up much offense. There were 5 punts, 2 fumbles, a turnover on downs and one big play from Selinsgrove quarterback Coy Bastian. With time running out in the first quarter, Bastian took the snap from shotgun, dashed left then broke right going straight through the Wildcat defense and went 67 yards to the house. Kyle Ruhl hit the pat to give the Seals a 7-0 lead. “One big play for us. One long drive for them” said Hicks.

Central Mountain had a big opportunity after the Bastian td. The Wildcats drove to the Seals 14 but fumbled the ball away giving up a golden opportunity to tie the game in the second quarter. “In the first half we weren’t real sharp” said Wildcat head coach Jim Renninger. “We missed some assignments and we turned the ball over when we were going in to score. You’re not going to wins games when you do that.”

Hicks acknowledged that the fumble may have been the biggest play for the Seals. “You tell the defense dont give up. Mishaps are going to happen and we have to take advantage.”
Central opened the second half looking a bit more organized. Getting the ball at their 33, the Wildcats drove to the one yard line where quarterback Brett Gerlach carried the rock in from the one. “I told our kids a year or two ago if we would have played like we did in the first half we would have got run out of the building” said Renninger. “They played hard the second half, we came back and kept it “a game”.

After missing a 42 yard field goal in the third quarter, Ruhl got his chance for redemption and made the best of it hitting from 22 yards out for the game winner.

The Wildcats had one more shot but their 34 yard field goal attempt with under a minute to play had plenty of distance but went wide right.
It’s really hard when you have to play a team twice, especially in their building” said Renninger.
