The Southern Columbia Tigers know how to win title games. They’ve won 12 coming into today. And now, they have number 13 via a 37-22 win over Westinghouse. It wasn’t an easy win by far as the Bulldogs hung around until the last three minutes of the game.

Westinghouse had just scored to come within 7 points on a Keyshawn Morsillio to Davon Jones bomb, setting up the onside kick with the Tigers leading 29-22. But the onside kick failed and Southern got the ball. One play later Wes Barnes had the Tigers on the 10 and Carter Madden delivered the hammer with a short td run for the final score.

“When you have to battle a little more it feels special” said head coach Jim Roth. “I just put them out there, they did it” he said of what could be called his best coaching job. “Our staff, we talked about it. They just never waivered when we struggled in the season and had some injuries.”

The Tigers struggled to get their offense going in the first half. From the first drive that ended up in a punt to the last of the first half. Westinghouse scored first on a Khalil Taylor 22 yard run midway through the first quarter. It was a failed fourth and four from their own 26 for the Bulldogs that led to the Tigers first score, a 1 yard run by Tyler Arnold. Isaac Carter gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish.

The second half it was all Tigers. Braeden Wisloski Went 36 yards to give the Tigers a 15-6 lead. Westinghouse struck back with a beautiful move by Taylor after the catch for a 54 yard td. But from there, the Tigers turned up the heat. Blake Wise dropped a dime into the lap of a streaking Wisloski and he did the rest for a 61 yard td.

The big plays kept coming with Louden Murphy going straight up the gut for a 35 yard td. “We get Wes Barnes back, Isaac came on board and it gave us a new feel” said Roth.  “This program is crazy and it all begins with coach Roth” said Wisloski who just punished the Westinghouse defense. The Maryland bound senior had several stunning runs throughout the second half and the Bulldog also had trouble containing Barnes all day. “This one is number one. With me going down and Garrett (Garcia) going down early in the season everyone counted us out” said Barnes of the win. “It’s to me the best come from behind win in Southern Columbia history.”
