Tigers Take Out Anger On Green Dragons

Southern Blanks Lewisburg 54-0

Southern Columbia was well aware of the fact that they have to travel on Route 54 to take on an undefeated Danville Ironmen squad next Friday. They weren’t intending for a pun as they beat Lewisburg 54-0 in week four, but they will take it. The Tigers had a much better showing than last week’s rare loss to Loyalsock.

“Despite how Lewisburg has played so far, I know they don’t have a win but nearly have won two games, I look at this game as a positive. The players had a different mindset at practice this week and it showed,” said SCA head coach Jim Roth.

During the annual Homecoming game, seniors Wes Barnes and Braeden Wisloski led the charge with two touchdowns a piece. They each scored on the ground while each two-way starter had a punt return for touchdowns in the opening quarter.

“As a player, you try to make an impact in any area that you can. I have started at fullback for the past three seasons, but this is the first year that I am starting on defense and returning kicks on special teams,” Barnes said.

Barnes and Wisloski are co-captains of this year’s squad along with fellow seniors Jake Toczylousky and Chris Treshock.

Toczylousky, who was crowned as the Homecoming King, caught his first career touchdown pass in the victory. Blake Wise hit him in the back right corner of the end zone on a 20-yard fade pattern.

“In the first three games I only had one catch and was trying to do too much. This was a memorable day for me,” said Toczylousky.

After the Lancers gashed the Tigers on the ground last week, the Tigers limited the Green Dragons to negative-11 yards on the ground in the first two quarters on Friday.

Additionally, after losing the turnover battle last week, Southern didn’t commit any in week four. The Tigers forced their undermatched opponent into three interceptions as the defensive unit looked solid all night.

“We stepped up on defense. Compared to last week, we made a lot more plays in the secondary and throughout the entire defense we played well,” said junior Jake Hoy who had two of the interceptions.

Carter Madden, who was supposed to be in a three-man rotation at the one halfback spot while starting at linebacker, scored the first touchdown of the game. With fellow juniors Garrett Garcia and Louden Murphy plagued with injuries this year, he has done more of a full-time double duty.

Garcia was lost with an ACL tear in week one, and Murphy has been sidelined twice so far. After Murphy’s first carry on Friday, he left with an ankle injury.

“I don’t know what happened to Louden exactly, but we just have to keep grinding no matter who is on the field. This was a good week to bounce back after our performance last week,” Wisloski said.

Madden scored the opening touchdown of the game on a five-yard carry. Southern jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter, highlighted by punt return touchdowns of 66 yards from Barnes and a 69-yarder from Wisloski, as they have now gone a fourth game without allowing a point in the first quarter.

As Barnes crossed the goal line on his special teams score with 8:19 left in the first quarter, the Tigers passed their point total in the entirety of last week’s 27-10 home loss to the Lancers.

“The coaching staff could tell that the players had a different approach all week. Our program hasn’t suffered many losses recently, especially this early in the season. Ever since Monday, the guys have been more locked in,” said Roth.

Another interesting stat, Lewisburg has now gone through the first four weeks without scoring a point in the first quarter after being blanked by SCA. The Green Dragons didn’t have an answer for the Tigers in any of the three phases of the game.

“We need to come out the same way that we did in this game when we kickoff next week. Penalties are still a concern, but the players have time to fix them. The aggressive penalties as a coach you can take. The mental ones are the ones that need to be eliminated,” Roth said.

The Tigers committed eight penalties in their win, but they didn’t have to worry about them nearly as much as they did last week. If the mistakes happen going forward, the oppositions will more than likely make the five-time defending PIAA Class 2A champions pay.

Junior Jack Biermaas and freshman Brayden Andrews each scored on the ground for the Tigers as the reserves got to play for more than two quarters after the Tigers took a 42-0 lead with 7:01 remaining until halftime.

Lewisburg will host Central Columbia next week. The Blue Jays will come in with a record of 1-3, so the Green Dragons should have a chance to get their first victory of 2022.
