Trojans Rout Wellsboro, 53-7

Troy scored on all five of their first half possessions en route to a 53-7 victory over Wellsboro.

Mason Smith got things rolling for the Trojans as he returned the opening kickoff 90 yards in the game’s first 15 seconds for the early lead. Brendan Gilliland scored the next three touchdowns for Troy: a 3 yard run with 7:48 remaining, a 52-yarder with four minutes to go, and then a 5 yard run with 1:16 remaining in the opening quarter. On Gilliland’s last run the snap on the extra point was bad, but the Trojans converted it for two points as Spencer Martin hit Smith to give the Trojans a 29-0 lead.

Martin then capped the first quarter scoring on a 33-yard pass from Smith to push the lead to 36-0.

Troy scored twice in the second quarter: a 1-yard run by Jayden Kutt with 5:51 left and then as the half expired as Gavin Lykon-Leffler booted a 37-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, with the mercy rule intact, the Hornets struck early in the 4th as sophomore Griffin Morral connected with junior Gideon Lawton from 32 yards out. Senior Finn Matthews converted the extra point, cutting the lead to 46-7.

Troy’s final score came on a one-yard run by Evan Allen with 5:45 remaining in the game.

Smith completed 5-of-7 passes for 72 yards and rushed 5 times for 34 yards. Gilliland finished with 127 yards on 5 carries to go along with this 3 touchdowns and Hunter Watson finished with 72 yards on 9 carries. Martin led the Troy receiving corps with 33 yards on his touchdown reception.

Morral finished 9-for-21 for 111 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Senior Marek Mascho led the Hornets’ ground attack with 46 yards on 5 carries. Freshman Colton Hauser also added 21 yards on 6 carries in the second half. Mascho caught 3 passes for 40 yards, Lawton hauled in two for 38 and junior Ethan Keane had one grab for 14 yards.

Sophomore Kody Enck and Mascho both made 6 tackles, junior Levi Champaign had a sack, and Keane recovered a fumble.

Wellsboro falls to 3-4 (3-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action as they face Canton for Homecoming next Friday.

Troy improves to 6-1 (6-0 NTL Large School Division). They host North Penn-Mansfield (4-3, 4-2 NTL Large School Division) next Friday.
