Will Spochart has scored a lot of points for the Mountaineers throughout his career, and last night he ended his high school football career by scoring a lot more points, earning himself the offensive player of the game award for the North.  Spochart threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another to lead team North to a 20-0 win on a beautiful football night at Johnstown High School Stadium.  “All glory to God on this one. We really felt like a team that’s been together for a while” said Spochart. But as good as Spochart was, it was a monstrous defensive game led by Tussey Mountains Chad Morningstar and Richland’s Connor Rager, and Spochart pointed that out. “That defense was loaded. All week we knew it was going to be tough for the other team to move the ball and it showed tonight.”

The North got their first points on the board when Spochart just laid the ball right into the hands of Central Cambria’s Nate Wyrwas for a 37 yard td. It took a bounce or two of the ball to make the catch, but he reeled it in for the score.

“It’s just great for these kids. They had a blast all week.  I’m just glad they got a chance to go out like this.” said Richland head coach Brandon Bailey of the win. “We had some really tough kids on defense and the coaches did a good job of getting them ready.” The North defense twice halted scoring opportunities in the first half. On their first series the South got to the North 20, but Morningstar and company held and stopped the drive. “It was amazing to be a part of that” said Morningstar. “We had a heck of a defensive line and the shut out was the icing on the cake. To shut out a team like that with all that talent, it was great.”

Spochart led the North to another score with 6:34 left in the first half. Jack Thomas of  Johnstown laid a perfect block on the South defender to allow Spochart to get free for the 15 yard td run. “Boy, that was a heck of a block by Jack” said Spochart.

Spochart and Wyrwas hooked up again in the third quarter to close out the scoring from 13 yards out. Spochart was 5 of 12 passing for 87 yards and accounted for 144 of the North’s 296 offensive yards. Wyrwas led all receivers with five catches for 78 yards.

“It was a fun ride, it was great to get to play with my boys one more time” said Chestnut Ridge qb Logan Phister.  “I got to meet some new friends and now I’m ready to move on. It was a tough game, that defense was good.”
