Clearfield Bison (11-0) District 9 at Bedford Bison (9-1) District 5

PIAA 3A Playoffs

Last Meeting Bedford 40 vs Clearfield 21 10/30/20

For the second straight year Bedford eliminated Clearfield from the playoffs. Bedford got off to a hot start and finish with a flurry. Clearfield, won the toss and deferred. Bedford got a nice kick return and were able to capitalize on it quickly. They went 42 yards in five plays with junior back Maxwell Washington capping off the drive from 6 yards out. It was 7-0 Bedford, a lead they would never lose.

It took Clearfield 12 seconds to answer as senior Karson Kline returned the kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown, but the point after was no good and Bedford still led 7-6. Bedford would answer back. They went on a 75 yard drive that lasted over six and a half minutes. Bedford was able to mix the run and the pass all night long with Mercury Swaim at quarterback. Swaim finished the drive with a one yard dive, three plays after converting a fourth and four from the Clearfield 16.

At this point nine and a half minutes were gone and Clearfield’s D-1 quarterback prospect Oliver Billotte hadn’t played a snap. Three plays later, two incompletions and a sack and Clearfield punted. This time Bedford would go 53 yards in three plays. Ethan Weber scored from 9 yards out on an option play to make it 21-6 Bedford.

As the second quarter started, Clearfield began to establish their running game. The drive consumed half of the second quarter before ending on downs when Billotte was sacked. This time it only took Bedford two plays to score, as Washington took a short Swaim pass and race 57 yards down the right sideline for a 27-6 lead. Clearfield would finally get their offense clicking as they went on a 76 yard, four minute drive. Carter Chamberlain scored from three yards out to give Clearfield some momentum before the half.

Bedford would fumble the ball back to Clearfield two plays later. The next two series for Clearfield would seal their fate. On the final possession of the first half from the Bedford 44, Clearfield would take just one deep shot and the ball was overthrown. The teams went to the locker rooms with Bedford up 27-12.

Clearfield’s last chance came in the scoreless third quarter. They took the opening kickoff and drove 48 yards in five minutes converting one fourth down before turning it over on downs. On fourth and 10 from the Bedford 32, Billotte hit Kline at the line of scrimmage and hoped he could get it all on his own. He was stopped four yards short. Bedford took over and would go 77 yards in 20 plays using up the entire third quarter and taking 8 minutes and 24 seconds off the clock. Clearfield had its chances on the drive. The second play of the drive was ruled an incompletion that looked liked a lateral that was recovered and returned to the end zone by Clearfield. Two plays late Swaim was sacked but a face mask penalty got Bedford out of trouble. Bedford converted three third and long situations and overcame a fourth and seven from the Clearfield 24. Swaim would score his second touchdown to cap the drive.

The next six minutes would see three long Bedford touchdowns, turning this one into a route. The first came after Billotte missed Kline who was being covered by Washington on a long pass. Both players received penalties for talking and pushing. Two plays later, Billotte threw a jump ball to Kline at the Bedford 35, but Washington won the jump ball and raced 65 yards for a Bedford touchdown. Three plays later facing a fourth and seven from their own 35, Clearfield decided to punt it. On the next play Swaim hit Washington on a quick slant and he was off to the races. The mercy rule was now in effect.  Two minutes later Weber pick off a pass in the flats and raced into the end zone to close out the scoring. Final Bedford 54 Clearfield 12.
