Bison have a big day!

Richland’s 7 on 7 and Big Man Challenge

Saturday July 25, 2021

By Greg Ricupero

It was a beautiful day yesterday in Richland for some football. Fifteen schools participated in Richland’s 7 on 7 tournament (Richland had 2 teams for a total of 16). The Bedford Bison last years Laurel Highlands champions look ready to repeat after winning both the 7 on 7 and the Big Man Challenge. In the Morning each team played two exhibition games before starting the 16 team single elimination tournament. The Bedford- Latrobe game was decided by just one point.

As noon approached the teams got ready to begin the big man challenge in the end zone between the 4 fields.Everyone know the skill players love to make noise and celebrate. But the Big Men were the loudest group today cheering on their teammates. The Big Man consisted of 15 teams(Forest Hills didn’t participate) competing in seven events. The events were

-Bench Press-won by Richland

-Hex Bar-won by Berlin

-Medicine Ball toss – won by Richland

-Farmers Walk – won by Bedford

-Tire Flip – won by Richland

-Prowler- won by Richland

-Medley Relay-combination of the above events -won by Bedford

The top five teams in each event were given points from 1 to 7. The top four teams after seven events entered a tug of war. All the schools performed well with a majority of the schools finishing in the points in at least one event. The final four teams were 1. Bedford 2. Richland 3. Latrobe 4. Chestnut Ridge. The Tug of Wars were great to watch. Bedford beat CR and Latrobe beat Richland. Richland then took 3rd place by beating CR. Latrobe then defeated Bedford to win the Tug. However the overall standings didn’t change and Bedford held on to win the day. Richland finished second, Latrobe third and Chestnut Ridge fourth.

The results from the seven on seven were

1st Round

Richland-Red over West Shamokin

Bedford over Chestnut Ridge

Portage over United

North Star over Meyersdale

Conemaugh Twp over Richland -Blue

Bishop McCort over Forest Hills

Latrobe over Derry

2nd Round

Bedford over Richland- Red

North Star over Portage

Conemaugh Twp over Bishop McCort

Latrobe over Berlin

Semis

Bedford over North Star

Final

Bedford over Latrobe

The final game was a great game. Latrobe scored on its first two possessions to build a 12-0 lead. But Bedford tied the game on the final play. The conversion failed and we went to overtime. Bedford won the toss and decided to play defense. The Wildcats scored and went for one taking a seven point lead. Bedford score two plays later and went for the win on a two point conversion. The pass was complete in the front left corner and the Bison were the winners.

All the kids really seemed to enjoy the day. I talked to many of them. They are all looking forward to the season. The Richland School District did a great job as usual. It was well organized. There was a food truck. The Rams always seem to have a lot of helpers and yesterday was no exception. The weather helped. There was a good variety of teams from A to 5 A. There were public schools and a private school. The WPIAL, LHAC, Heritage, West Pac and Inter-County League were all represented. I’m really looking forward to the season and hope to see the fans back in masses.
