WestPAC Game of the Week

October 9, 2020

Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers (4-0) @ Windber Ramblers (4-0)

Last Meeting 9/20/19 Berlin 49-7

A battle of two unbeaten teams became a tale of two halves. Windber took the opening kickoff and drove 34 yards in four and a half minutes. They converted one fourth down before turning in over on downs at the Berlin 42. The Mountaineers would also convert a fourth down before punting it back to the Ramblers. Windber would score on their second possession as #2 sophomore running back John Schuster swept right and ran 48 yards untouched for the touchdown. Jordan Wright add the point after and Windber lead 7-0. Berlin had to start from its own 23, but a holding call derailed them and forced a punt. The first quarter ended with Windber leading. Both teams exchanged punts to start the second. Berlin quarterback #2 William Spochart was then sacked by #2 John Schuster. Windber recover and scored quickly. The touchdown came on a reverse pass from Aaron Willis to Dylan Tomlinson. (Check it out on my Twitter @GregoryRicupero) Berlin would then go on it’s only drive of the half going from their own 39 to the Rambler 15 before fumbling the ball away with just over a minute to go in the first half.

The second half was a different story. Mountaineer coach Doug Paul must have had some halftime speech. Berlin Brothersvalley came out and destroyed Windber in the second half. The Mountaineers basically ran the same play the entire second half. The first play of the third quarter was an incomplete pass. After that Berlin either ran Spochart behind their offensive line or he handed off to senior back Preston Foor. No trick plays, no gadgets they just ran the Ramblers over. The only thing that changed was Berlin went no huddle. But you don’t need to huddle if you run the same play. It allowed the Mountaineers to run a lot more plays. The average high school team runs 56 plays, less if you are a running team. Spochart ran 40 times for over 170 yards and Foor ran 24 times for over 100 yards. Berlin would run 49 plays in the second half, 48 were running plays. The Mountaineers first two drives of the second half were 14 rushing plays plus the pass. They covered 67 and 49 yards. Spochart scored on two short runs to tie the score at 14-14. Winder had a three and out in between.

Windber tried a reverse on the following kickoff and it backfired. The Ramblers were forced to start from their own 5. The next play senior linebacker Charlie Fisher intercepted quarterback Aiden Gray’s pass attempt.  Berlin had the ball back at the Rambler 5 in a tie game with a minute to go in the third. Berlin wasted no time as Foor scored from 5 yards out. The first play after a touchback Gray was sacked and fumbled. Berlin recovered and the Windber 18. The quarter ended with Berlin running 33 plays to Windber 5. A holding call pushed the Mountaineers back to the Rambler 15 and they were forced to kick a field goal. Brady Glessner made the first of his two 32 yard field goals. Windber starting at their own 20, ran two plays and loss the ball again when they fumbled. Berlin drove to the Windber 1 but couldn’t punch it into the end zone and a bad snap forced them to kick their second field goal. Winder had another three and out and punted. The Mountaineers then drove down the field again running out the clock as they started huddling up.

Berlin will host Portage next week as the last two undefeated teams in the WestPAC meet. Windber should rebound at North Star. If you haven’t been to Windber Stadium you need to go. It’s a beautiful facility. They had a nice crowd with the new attendance rules. Both teams should make the playoffs. Berlin’s offensive front was scary good. They basically ran the same play and overcame five holding calls. The leading rushers for both team worn the number 2.
