HANOVER TWP- Windber’s Aaron Willis is determined to make the most of his senior year. Denied a transfer from Johnstown last year, he was forced to sit out his junior year. That decision may not bode to well for the Ramblers opponents going forward.

Saturday afternoon at Gayewski Memorial Stadium, Hanover Area was introduced to Willis’ ability as he gashed the Hawkeyes for five touchdowns and an interception as the Ramblers, who traveled over three hours for this contest, took care of business 42-25 before a decent crowd all things considered.

Windber is out of District 5 and play in the Western Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.

Windber forced a Hanover Area fumble on the opening drive, Willis scooped up the loose ball and cashed it in from 14 yards out and a 7-0 lead with Jordan Wright connecting on the point-after,

The second touchdown came on a fade route and a perfect pass from quarterback Aiden Gray covering 21 yards,. The PAT was no good giving the Ramblers a 13-0 with 2:39 left in the opening quarter.

The Hawkeyes, got on the scoreboard after a 67 yard kickoff return set the offense deep in Rambler territory. Connor Hummer took a shuffle pass 23 yards to cut the lead to 13-7. Running backTavon Hines brought the home team within one point as he found paydirt from two yards out with just eight seconds left before intermission, but a bad snap on the extra-point left the scored tied at 13.

Windber took the lead for good on the opening drive of the second half as running back John Shuster converted from two yards after a drive that consumed 4:31 off the clock.

The Hawks showing no let up scored on quarterback Joe Curcio went in from 6 yards out, but the two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 20-19 with 2:40 left in the third quarter. that was as close as they would get. On the ensuing Rambler Drive facing a third and 20 from their own 15, Gray hit Willis in stride for an 85 yard score. Dylan Tomlinson converted the two-points and the score was 28-19.

“Basically it comes down to speed kills.” Hanover Area coach Rick Hummer stated. “We had short week to prepare as this game was scheduled on Tuesday. We didn’t get the looks needed to make the proper reads with that misdirection they run.” He concluded.

Windber ended up with 202 rushing yards on 36 carries. Shuster led the way 89 of those yards on 18 carries.

After Hanover went three and out, Willis took the punt at his 36 and weaved his way for a 64 yard jaunt as the horn sounded ending the third quarter to making the score 35-19.

Curcio scored, for the Hawkeyes from seven yards out and again the conversion failed. Willis got his final score from 14 yards out with 5:20 left in the contest.

“He played outstanding last week and again he was a superstar this week.” Windber coach Matt Grohal stated about Willis. “Other teams around our league will find out real quick how special he is.” He concluded.
