2022 D6 AA Quarterfinal Game Preview: Mount Union @ Penns Valley

The 2022 PIAA D6 Class AA football playoffs start this weekend.  The teams are looking to end their seasons with a trip to Chapman Field at Cumberland Valley High Scholl for PIAA Championships.  The Championship will take place 12/9 @ 1pm.

In the 2021 D6 AA Championship, Richland beat Forest Hills 35-6.  Richland has won the last 4 D6 AA titles.  Richland also won in 2012, and has been D6 AA runner up 3 times.  Richland’s 5 D6 AA championships are 3rd most all time behind Tyrone(9) and Forest Hills (8).  Bishop Guilfoyle moved to AA this year after a very successful run in A.  Bishop Guilfoyle has 6 D6 A titles and made the D6 A Championship 9 times.  Bishop Guilfoyle has 4 PIAA A Titles (2014,2015,2016,2021) and was PIAA A runner up in 2019.  Bellwood-Antis has 5 D6 A Titles (1997,2004,2006,2007,2012) and 1 D6 AA Title (1988).  Bellwood-Antis was the runner up in D6 A-4 times and D6 AA-2 times.  Bald Eagle Area has made the D6 AAA finals 5 times and won 3 titles (1988,2018,2019).  Mount Union has been to the D6 AA championships 3 times and has never won.  Penns Valley, Southern Huntingdon, and West Shamokin have never been to a D6 championship.  Here are the seeds and season records for the 8 teams in the 2022 D6 AA tournament:

Let’s look at Penns Valley v Mount Union

On 11/04 at 7pm #7 Mount Union will play @ #2 Penns Valley for a D6 AA Quarterfinal game.  Mount Union fished the season 6-4 and finished 5th in the Inter County League.  Mount Union lost 26-22 to Juniata Valley last week.  Penns Valley finished the season 8-2 and finished 3rd in the Mountain Athletic Conference.  Penns Valley beat Bellwood-Antis 42-0 last week.

Penns Valley is led on offense by Junior QB Jackson Romig, Junior RB Ty Watson, and Senior WR Miles Brooks.  Romig has passed 110-167 for 1,741 yards with 22 TDs and 6 INTs.  Romig has also rushed 70 times for 201 yards and 4 TDs.  Watson has rushed 172 times foe 1,116 yards (6.5 average) and 21 TDs and has 17 receptions for 221 yards and 1 TD.  Brooks has 48 receptions for 806 yards and 12 TDs.   Penns Valley has averaged 37 points per game and have outscored their opponents 372-173.  On defense, Penns Valley is led by Junior MLB Caleb Confer, Junior OLB Josh Lieb, and Senior LB Kollin Brungart.  Confer has 71 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 INT.  Lieb has 69 tackles, 1 INT, and leads the team with 4 sacks.  Brungart has 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks.  The Penns Valley defense has only allowed 17 points per game this season.  Watson has made 46-50 PATs this season.

Mount Union is led on offense by Junior QB Bryce Danish, Sophomore RB Josh Ryan, and Junior WR Cainen Atherton.  Danish has passed 93-155 for 1,341 yards with 12 TDs and 4 INTs.  Danish is Mount Union’s leading rusher with 147 carries for 1,069 yards (7.3 average) and 11 TDs.  Ryan has rushed 95 times for 589 yards (6.2 average) a 3 TDs.  Atherton has 21 receptions for 400 yards and 5 TDs.  Mount Union has scored 31 points per game and outscored their opponents 310-264.  On defense, Mount Union is led by Sophomore MLB Josh Ryan, Junior MLB Xavier Peck, and Junior Hunter Steel.  Ryan has 121 tackles and has caused 3 fumbles.  Peck has 87 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 1 INT.  Steel has 76 tackles, 6 sacks, and 2 fumble recoveries.

The winner of this game will make the D6 AA Semifinals against the winner of the Bald Eagle Area/Bellwood-Antis game. That preview found HERE


The Class AA D6 Tournament consists of 8 teams.  The quarterfinal round is 11/04, the semifinals are 11/11, and the D6 AA Championship will be held at Mansion Park on 11/18 at 7pm.  The 2022 D6 AA Champion will move on to play the D4 Champion on either 11/25 or 11/26 in the PIAA AA State Quarterfinals.
