#1 Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders (10-2) vs #2 Juniata Valley Hornets (10-2) from Mansion Park in Altoona
Last Meeting 11/17/19 Semi-Finals District VI Juniata Valley won 9-3

For the 4th straight year these two teams have met in the District VI playoffs. Bishop Guilfoyle had ended Juniata Valley’s season two years in a row before the Hornets returned the favor, last year on their way to the district championship. It was an entertaining game that saw a defensive struggle in the first half turn into a second half shootout.

Juniata Valley won the toss and deferred. Bishop Guilfoyle started its opening drive from their own 32. The first play saw thousand yard rusher Keegan Myrick go off the right side for 24 yards. The Marauders strategy seem to be shifting their line and slowing the game down. They ran an unbalanced line at least once in nearly every possession and used all of their 40 seconds on most plays. Three plays later on 4th and 3 from the Hornets 37, the Marauders decided to play field position and punted. The result was a touchback.
Juniata Valley’s strategy was a running attack with a lot of motion and a short passing attack. The Hornets managed 5 yards in three plays and punted. Both teams than had 3 and outs and punted. Bishop Guilfoyle’s third drive started at their own 40 and they drove 60 yards for the game’s first score. The big play was a 30 yard run by fullback Zach McCloskey. Konner Kiesewetter hit Andrew Yanoshak with a 10 yard TD pass on 3rd and goal. The kick failed and with 2:41 to go in the first it was 6-0 BG.

Juniata Valley started their next possession on their own 35. They drove inside the Marauder 20 before being stopped. The eleven play drive took six minutes off the clock. The big play was a long pass down the left sideline from Caden Rupert to Gabe Brower, who was pushed out of bounds at the BG 12. The Marauder defense than made a stand and force a 4th and 11.The Hornets elected to kick a field goal. Jefferson Hill kicked a 30 yard field goal to cut the lead in half with 8:42 to go in the 2nd quarter.

The Marauders started their next drive from their own 20 and drove 35 yards in seven plays taking four minutes off the clock. They punted, pinning the Hornets inside their own 20. Three plays later JV punted and BG had great field position at the Hornets 42. With under two minutes to play in the 1st half, BG called time out facing a 3rd and 8 from the JV 28. Myrick than ran 27 yards to the one and scored on the next play. The Marauders went for two and the flanker pass from Karson Kiesewetter to Myrick made it 14-3 with 1:33 to go in the half. Juniata Valley abandoning the ground game drove from their own 36 to the Marauder 44 but punted on 4th and 2. Bishop Guilfoyle took two knees and went to the locker room with the lead.

Juniata Valley came out for the second half knowing they would have to start throwing longer passes and come up with some plays on defense. Marauder Head Coach Justin Wheeler could be heard telling his team to keep the plays in front of them and force the Hornets to drive down the field. Juanita Valley would start the second half from its own 19.

The Hornets threw four straight passes, going 81 yards in a minute and eight seconds. Jacob Hensor to a swing pass from Caden Rupert 66 yards for a TD. The kick failed and BG led 14-9. The Marauders nearly broke the following kickoff for a touchdown. The kick was returned to the JV 30. Eight plays later on 4th and goal from the one, Myrick scored again. Karson Kiesewetter added the point after. Down two scores again the Hornets started this drive at their own 37. Three plays later Rupert hit Hensor on a slant that went 43 yards for a touchdown. Juniata Valley went for two and made it on a flanker pass from Grant Musser to Hensor. It was 21-17 BG with 5:15 to go in the third quarter.

Bishop Guilfoyle starting at their own 45 used up the entire 3rd quarter and over three minutes of the 4th quarter driving to the Hornets 20. They converted a big 4th down with a defensive offside penalty. Facing another 4th down, they were forced to pass and stopped on downs. Juniata Valley took over at their own 20 and seemed to have the momentum.

Juniata Valley ran two plays and gained a first down. The Play of the Game than occurred Yanoshak came free and crushed Rupert at his own 20, the ball came loose and the Marauders recovered it. Five plays later Konner Kiesewetter scored from three yards out. BG ran their version of the Philly special on the two pointer and scored on a Sam Homan pass to Konner Kiesewetter. It was 29-17 BG with 5:45 to play. Forced to throw deep, the Hornets were intercepted on the next play.

The Marauders went 46 yards in two plays with McCloskey scoring from 42. Karson Kiesewetter added the point after. It was 36-17 with 4:40 to go. The Hornets were picked off again and BG ran out the clock. The Marauders won by winning the turnover battle and controlling the clock with their offensive line. Juniata Valley finishes the season one game short of winning back to back District VI championships. Bishop Guilfoyle will move on to play Lackawanna Trail in the eastern finals with the winner going to Hershey.
