BlueJays claw Wolves!

West Shamokin Wolves (4-3) at Conemaugh Valley Blue Jays (3-3)

Twitter @GregoryRicupero

On a very rainy Saturday afternoon, two teams heading in different directions met. West Shamokin came into the game allowing over 40 points a game in their last three contests. Conemaugh Valley had scored over 50 points in their last two games. Both teams have a good chance to host an opening round playoff game in three weeks.

The weather and field conditions favored the BlueJays who were celebrating senior day. The Wolves like to throw the ball all over the field with star quarterback Bo Swartz. The BlueJays like to pound the rock with Mr. Inside Logan Kent (5’9” 170) and Mr. Outside Nick Heltzel (5’6” 145). Kent runs them over and Nick runs by them.

West Shamokin kicked off to start the game and recovered the onside kick. However the ball had only travelled  nine and a half yards. A few plays later Noah Heltzel hit brother Nick for a 32 yard gain to the Wolves five yard line. Logan Kent pounded the ball into the end zone on the next play and CV was up 6-0.

West Shamokin would answer with a 65 yard drive that featured Bo Swartz passing and running. Bo would score from 10 yards out on a scramble and the game was tied. CV would answer right back in less then a minute. Once again they started the drive in Wolves territory and once again Kent scored the touchdown. Both teams would punt on their next drive and than fumble on their following drive as the rain continued to fall. The Wolves had the ball and were driving as the first quarter ended. The drive was aided by a personal foul penalty and a defensive pass interference. The Wolves drive ended in a game tying touchdown, Bo To Lou Swartz.

It took just one play for the BlueJays to take the lead for good. Nick Heltzel took the pitch and ran down the left sideline 70 yards for a touchdown. Noah would hit Kent for the first successful conversion of the day for either team and it was 20-12. The Wolves would now lose their second fumble of the day and the BlueJays had the ball on the West Shamokin 39. Two plays later Nick would get loose again and go 37 yards for his second touchdown.

The Wolves would than blow a major opportunity to get back in the game. Christian Sharp would return the kickoff 65 yards to the CV 10. But four incompletions later and the chance to get back into the game had slipped away.

The Wolves would get a second chance three plays later as the BlueJays rolled the dice and went for it on fourth and one from their own 19. It was a gutsy call by BlueJays coach Matthew Kent. Little used fullback Zack Bell fooled everyone with a 40 yard run right up the middle.

Nick would finish the 90 yard drive with his third touchdown of the half. The Wolves would have time to get the ball near midfield as the half ended with the BlueJays up 34-12.

West Shamokin got the ball first to start the second half and fumbled again. Two plays later Bell took the hand off and ran over the entire Wolves defense for a touchdown. The Wolves went three and out on their next drive and punted. The Blue Jays would overcome a holding call when Nick raced around and thru the Wolves defense for his fourth touchdown. The Mercy Rule took effect with 6:45 to go in the third quarter. West Shamokin would lose their fourth fumble on their next possession. Kent would score his third touchdown of the day on the next play.

The Wolves next drive ended with a sack on fourth down. The BlueJays would go 70 yards on their final drive, Nick scored his fifth touchdown on a 45 yard run, but it was called back on a hold. Two plays later Kent scored his fourth on a 36 yard run. The West Shamokin back ups ran out the clock. Final CV 62 WS 12
