Heritage Conference // District 6 Playoff Preview
D6 Single A 1st Round
Marion Center Stingers #8 (4-6) at Northern Cambria Colts #1 (9-1)
MC PF 15.6 PA 21.0. NC PF30.5 PA 12.9
The only rematch of the week. These teams meet in week #3 at Northern Cambria and the Colts won 21-7. Since that game the Stingers have only given up a maximum of two touchdowns in any game but one. Since week #4 the Colts have won every game by at least 17 points except one. This wouldn’t be an easy 1 versus 8 game, but I just don’t think the Stingers can score enough points. Both teams are better than earlier in the season but Ty Dumm at quarterback for the Colts is the difference maker.
MC to win: Play tough defense, get turnovers and don’t make mistakes.
NC to win: Just get the ball to their playmakers, Dumm, Sheredy & Dolney.
Take the Colts
West Branch Warriors #5 (5-5) at Cambria Heights Highlanders #4 (7-3)
WB PF 31.2 PA 23.4. CH PF 26.6 PA 12.5
The Warriors finished fourth in the ICC. The Highlanders 5th in the Heritage. But I would argue the Heritage is a lot tougher conference. West Branch had a five game winning streak stopped last week against North Star, after an 0-4 start to the season. The Highlanders were held to less than 21 points three times this season, they loss each game. If Cambria Heights offensive line plays like it is capable of, game over. They will score and shorten the game. The Warrior defense is giving up over 23 points a game. Part of that is the ICC is more offense, less defense. But we all know defense wins championships.
WB to win: Score on every possession & force CH to pass.
CH to win: Run the ball, control the clock and don’t give up the big play.
Take the Highlanders
Penns Manor Comets #6 (5-5) at Juniata Valley Hornets #3 (7-3)
PM PF 19.3 PA 18.6 JV PF 22.6 PA 21.5
The Comets are a streaky team, win three, loss four and now on a two game win streak. The Hornets have been shut out twice and scored over 40 points twice. Both teams have just one win against a team with a winning record. The. Omega had a four game run where they scored only two touchdowns. This is not the same old playoff giant at JV. I look for Carter Smith to have a big game and lead PM to victory.
PM to win: Score points and stay ahead of the chains.
JV to win: Force the Comets to pass and score 20 points.
Got to stay with Heritage, Take the Comets
Moshannon Valley Black Knights #7 (5-5) at Purchase Line Red Dragons #2 (7-3)
MV PF 24.7 PA 23.4. PL PF 25.7 PA 18.8
Another Inter-County vs Heritage matchup. The Knights didn’t beat a team with more than three wins. The Dragons have been devastated by injuries. Coach Matt Falisec will have his team up. A win could set up a possible rematch of last weeks 22-19 loss to the Comets on Senior Night. The Dragons loss two of their games by three points or less. Look for a big games by Brock Small & John Elick!
MV to win: Keep the ball away from PL & force some turnovers.
PL to win: Play their game and let both their lines control the action.
Take the Red Dragons
D6 Double A 1st Round
Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders #8 (6-4) at Bald Eagle Bald Eagles #1 (9-1)
The Eagles are out scoring their opponents 3 to 1. The Marauders 2 to 1. I wouldn’t bet against BG.
Take the Marauders in my upset pick
Forest Hills Rangers #5 (7-3) at River Valley Panthers #4 (8-2)
FH PF 32.4 PA 20.4. RV PF 32.3 PA 14.8
The Rangers had a brutal early schedule and have won their last five. In the Panthers two losses they gave up big plays in the passing game. Ranger quarterback Nate Cornell has over 1500 passing yards and 16 TD passes. The Panthers two headed monster Sam Yantis and Gavin Burkhart have over 1000 and 800 yards respectively. Playing at home on grass should help the Panthers. They play a different level of football in the Laurel Highlands.
FH to win: Play there normal game and keep their defense off the field.
RV to win: A windy, cold night would help. They need to create turnovers and not give up the big play.
Love to root for the home team but take the Rangers
Mount Union Trojans #5 (8-2) at United Valley Lions #3 (9-1)
MU PF 41.0 PA 14.0 UV PF 26.7 PA 9.4
The top dog in the ICC and the top cat in the Heritage. It should be a good one. I’ll be there Friday.
When the Heritage used to do crossovers with the WestPac, they always dominated except in the championship game. That game was usually a blow out for one team or the other. The Trojan offense is outstanding but they only played two teams with a winning record all year. They beat single A Juniata Valley and were beaten badly by Berlin. The Lions defense is outstanding and should control the action.
MU to win: Score early and often. Control the field position.
UV to win: Protect the ball, don’t give up the big play and maul them on defense.
Take the Lions at home
Penns Valley Rams #7 (6-4) at Richland Rams #2 (9-1)
Richland are still almost plus 200 points for the year despite losing last week. PV is negative for the season. Richland’s time of the year.
Take Richland big
