A chilly evening in the once prevalent PA canal system town of Lewistown played host to one heck of a game this first weekend of November. Shane Breon’s Mifflin County team came into this evening in the midst of a historic season. His senior “do it all” tailback, Deakon Sheaffer, came into the night as the newly minted all time leading rusher in Husky history. The team was in the playoffs for a 2nd consecutive season for the 1st time in school history. To top it all off, they were hosting it all on their home field for the very first time. However the visiting Mountain Lions and their potent triple option attack would win the day and possibly close Mitchell Field forever on a loss with the Mountain Lions taking the win, 26-8 to advance in the playoffs. (Mifflin county is building a new sports complex).

Bron Mosley and the “Cats” ran up and down the field in quarter number 1. They found pay dirt on the back of a 1 yard plunge from Mosley with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter to make it a 7-0 lead for the visitors.

Mifflin County’s offense finally managed to get something going the next drive, with a steady diet of Sheaffer before a penalty on third down would ice Mifflin County’s momentum. Mosley cashed in again on the ensuing possession, taking the ball on all but two plays of the drive before finding the endzone for the 2nd time on the night with 11:05 to go in the 2nd ( PAT no good). Mifflin County’s offense continued to sputter, as the miscue bug took a bite out of Mifflin County’s momentum and they were not able to move the ball. The Mountain Lions took advantage of a short field on the next drive, with Mosley taking it in from the 4 yard line with 33.5 seconds to go in the 1st half. (2pt no good) The score was 19-0 at the end of the half.

Penalties ruled the third quarter but Mosley provided the 2 in the 1-2 combo that was an 84 yard strike to Josh Corso setting up a 5 yard score with 9:44 to go in the 4th after defenses dominated the third quarter. The 2 point conversion was no good but Altoona had a commanding 26-0 lead. Mifflin County finally managed success through the air on the following drive with Landon Eichorn leading his offense down the field. The drive was capped off by a TD strike to Parker Kearns with 7:27 to go in the final stanza. Eichorn found senior receiver Aidan Reed in the back of the endzone on the 2pt try.

There was a glimmer of hope the following drive, as Avery Aurand was able to recover the Isaac Parks-Gil onside kick. The Huskies would fall behind the sticks very early though with a pair of Landon Eichorn incompletions and a penalty. That was before Eichorn attempted a drive saving run fit for the highlight reels. Unfortunately for Mifflin County Eichorn came short of the sticks and turned it over. The Huskies wouldn’t see possession again and fell to the Mountain Lions 26-8.

I caught up with Deakon Sheaffer after the game and he had this to say “To be honest, it doesn’t feel real, but I am thankful for the game of football and more importantly my team. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

An emotional coach Breon had this to say, “To my seniors, I just want to say thank you. These guys have laid the groundwork for a successful program and I hope we can continue that path.”
