Marion Center, PA –
It was a Stinger-themed senior night showdown under the glow of the Friday night lights at John Mallino Stadium, as two previously undefeated teams, the Northern Cambria Colts and the Marion Center Stingers, met for a District 6, Heritage Conference tussle. One arose victorious, as Marion Center’s Ty Ryen threw two passes within the first six minutes of the game. “I give all my credit to the offensive line for giving me time to make good decisions downfield. The receivers make plays on the football,” said Ty Ryen. The Colts fell to the Stingers, 28-7.
Stingers coach Adam Rising said, “Friday’s game against Northern Cambria is a huge win for our program. It’s the first time since 2009, that we have a team that is 4-0. More importantly our players are playing with a lot of confidence and displaying maturity within our program. We had a lot of playmakers during Friday’s game. It was a defensive win starting up front with our defensive line. Marvin Beatty, Destin Fisher, Billy Gaston and Gavin Effinger were outstanding on the front line. Our defense forced two turnovers and had a huge goal line stand before halftime.”
Ryen completed 10 of 18 pass attempts, for a total of 169 yards. Two of three passes went for touchdowns. The Stinger defense performed impressively and stayed one step ahead at each turn. Senior captain, nose guard, and right tackle Marvin Beatty said, “It showed how practice paid off.”
The Stingers led with two fourth-down stops and three possessions that met at a goal-line stand to cap the first half. Marion Center forced two turnovers, sacked the quarterback four times, and shut down the Colts offensive line at an average of 400-to-211 yards.
At the bottom of the first half, the Colts had a first-down at the last minute, at 15-0. The Colts trailed by 22, when Ryen achieved the first possession of the second half from the one.
The Colts reared to life after being turned back at the Stingers one, with Northern Cambria’s senior quarterback Mike Hoover’s 35-yard RPO, and Owen Prasko’s, the game’s top rusher who boasted 80-yards on eight carries, led a 58-yard charge up the middle, post-defensive stop, into the Stingers’ nest. Northern Cambria’s efforts were thwarted when Justin Peterson scored an 8-yard scamper in the final quarter, and T.J. Lynn intercepted Hoover on third-and-29.
For the first time since 2009, the Stingers sealed a 4-0 record.
The Colts, trying for their first 5-0 beginning since 2003, missed opportunities to get back into the game. The Stingers capitalized on the opening kickoff of the second half to cap the 1-yard run by Ryen.
“When we got ahead and started to gain traction, the running backs went farther in yards and the line was holding the blocks,” said Beatty.
Marion Center stopped NC in their tracks on the fourth down at the game’s start. In eight plays that spanned 48-yards, Justin Peterson scored a touchdown.
“We destroyed their offense by stopping with big hits by Xavier Vaglia, Justin Fisher, and me,” said Beatty.
Next week, the Colts are scheduled to host the unbeaten Penns Manor, 5-0. Marion Center will travel to United, 1-4.
