Hollidaysburg’s Justin Wolfe runs the ball in Friday night’s District Six 5A Championship game win over Central Mountain. Friday, November 5, 2021.

On a cold Friday night playoff game, Hollidaysburg Head Coach Homer DeLattre and the Golden Tigers were able to use the second half of the game to pull away and win the 2021 District Six 5A Championship game. Senior quarterback Jake McGinnis led the Golden Tiger offense Friday night being responsible for all six scores. McGinnis had three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns. For coach Manning and the Central Mountain Wildcats, it was a heartbreaker but the Wildcats didn’t leave without a fight. Senior Brett Gerlach and Sophomore Connor Foltz connected for two scores in the game while trying to fight to stay in it.

Central Mountain opened the game Friday night with a touchdown drive of their own. Senior Ryan Pentz bounced a run play right and rumbled his way into the endzone from 20 yards out. The extra point was missed making the early first quarter score 6-0. The Golden Tigers would respond later in the game after a blown coverage by the Wildcats. McGinnis would find Avery Sloan wide open for the 72-yard touchdown. Ben Sosnowski would nail the extra point giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead.

Central Mountain would find the endzone once again midway through the second quarter. Gerlach would connect with Foltz from eight yards out with a toe-tap catch. The extra point was missed again making the score 12-7 Wildcats. On the ensuing Golden Tiger possession, Pentz would get an interception on defense, but the Wildcats were forced to punt. The Golden Tigers pushed the ball quickly as time was running out in the half. With 19 seconds to go in the half, McGinnis scrambled out of the pocket and found Caden DeLattre from 30 yards out for the touchdown. Sosnowski made the pat making the halftime score 14-12 Golden Tigers.

To start the second half the Golden Tigers stepped on the gas pedal and never looked back. On the opening drive, McGinnis would scramble out left and find a wide-open path to go 53 yards for the score. Sosnowski made the pat making the score 21-12. After a Wildcat punt, McGinnis would once again use his legs to find the endzone this time from 25 yards out. After the Sosnowski pat, this pushed the Golden Tigers’ lead to 28-12.

The Wildcats would respond with a touchdown of their own. Gerlach once again found Foltz from 32 yards. The two-point conversion was no good making the score 28-18. The following Wildcat possession also resulted in points. Tyler Weaver nailed the 32-yard field goal to bring the score within seven, but unfortunately for the Wildcats McGinnis wasn’t done.

Late in the fourth quarter, McGinnis would find his way into the endzone from 12 yards out after a turnover on downs deep in Wildcats territory. Sosnowski nailed the pat making the score 35-21 Golden Tigers. And the final score of the night was another McGinnis to Sloan reception this time from 23 yards out as Sloan dagged the defender into the endzone. After the Sosnowski pat, the score was 42-21 in which would be the final score of Friday night’s game.

The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers are the 2021 District Six 5A Champions and will advance into the state playoffs as they will take on Cathedral Prep next week. For the Central Mountain Wildcats, their season comes to an end but not one to forget about for the Wildcats as they finish 6-5 on the year.
