Panthers stun Marauders!  @PennPanther @BGMarauderFball

Penn Cambria served notice to the rest of the Laurel Highlands Conference Saturday night with a dominant victory over the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders.

If BG hadn’t won the special teams battle and made several red zone stops the score could have been a lot worse than the 27-14 final. It wouldn’t get any easier for BG who play at Richland next week. But we all know head coach Justin Wheeler will have the Marauders ready by playoff time.

The Panthers got the ball first at their own 20 and decided to establish junior Star quarterback Garrett Harrold. After a couple of punishing runs got a first down, a couple of incompletion brought up a fourth and five from the Panthers 35. Harrold dropped back to punt and then raced around the left end picking up the first down. Harrold picked up about four blockers at midfield and was escorted into the end zone for an easy touchdown. The kick failed and it was 6-0, just two and a half minutes into the game. BG came right back scoring in four plays starting from their own 40. The Marauders own star junior quarterback Karson Kiesewetter raced 33 yards around the Panthers left end for a touchdown. Special team ace Deven Wyandt gave the Marauders the lead 7-6 with the PAT.

The Panthers drove into the Marauder red zone on their next possession before Kiesewetter picked off a Harrold pass near the end zone. BG’s next drive was stopped by a penalty and a sack. The Panthers then drove into BG territory as the first quarter ended. The drive ended after a sack forced a fourth and long. Harrold’s pass was incomplete and BG took over at their own 26. A 48 yard punt by Wyandt penned the Panthers back at their own 20. The Panthers would go on an 80:yard drive taking up five and a half minutes to take the lead for good. PC got into the red zone for the third straight drive, but this time was able to convert a fourth and three from the 15.

Vinny Chirdon then ran it in from seven yards out and Noah Noel added the point after. The half ran out with BG in possession.

BG started the second half with a procedure penalty, a sack and a Wyandt punt. The Panthers would go 89 yards in three minutes to increase their lead. Harrold had a 38 yard run and then scored from the BG eleven. The lead was now 20-7. On the Marauders next drive they had a hold, a false start , a sack and punted on fourth and 36.

Things were looking good for the Panthers at this point. Welcome to the Harrold Factor. Harrold suffered a leg injury with about four minutes to go in the third quarter. The results of the next two and a half minutes were: a Panthers 3 and out, the backup punter having his punt blocked and BG scoring to get back into the game.

Haiden Garner caught a 12 yard pass from Kiesewetter to make it 20-14. Things were looking up for BG after another touchback on the kickoff. Panthers were holding a slim six point lead and were penned deep as the fourth quarter started. Harold started to take over the game with punishing runs and a little over a minute into the fourth quarter, Zach Grove broke loose and raced down the right sideline to increase the lead back to 13.

BG is a well coached team and there was no need to panic. Kiesewetter starting at his own 40 drove to the Panther one yard line in four minutes The big plays were a Kiesewetter 35 yard pass to Vincent Cioffari and a Kiesewetter 14 yard scramble to the one.

The next three minutes would spell the end for BG. The Panthers stuffed four rushing attempts from the one and then avoid taking a safety twice before converting two huge third down conversions from inside their twenty. BG got the ball back with 26 seconds but couldn’t score.

The Panthers Garrett Harrold had a great game, but this was a team win. Their offensive line gave Harold time to throw. Harrold and the Panther backs ran hard and protected the ball. The defensive line harassed Kiesewetter all night and didn’t give up a yard when BG only needed one yard. The starting field position difference should have been more than any team could overcome, but the Panthers did overcome. The biggest difference may have been the Panther student section which cheered the team on with unbelievable passion.  It took the Panthers almost three hours but they got a well deserved win.
