Penns Valley records 300th win in a 35-20 win over the Philipsburg Mounties.

Story by Rodney Brungart

The Penns Valley Rams came into the game with Philipsburg-Osceola seeking win number 300 for the progam. They left with with victory, a 35-20 rout over the Mounties. Penns Valley opened the game on their own 32 yard line. After numerous pass completions by Penns Valley quarterback Rylee Brungart, Tanner Ilgen raced in from 2 yards out to give Penns Valley their first score of the game. Extra point attempt by Ty Watson was good and with 7:33 remaining in the 1st quarter, Penns Valley was up 7-0 and on their way to win number 300, but it wasn’t easy at first. Both teams went 3 and out on their next possessions.

Philipsburg would come right back with a score of their own on a 22 yard pass play from Luke Hughes to Matt Martin. Extra point by Carson Long tied the game at 7 a piece with 2:16 left in the 1st quarter. Penns Valley fumbled the ball away on the kickoff, with Philipsburg recovering. The Mounties moved the ball down the field, with a 23 yard touchdown pass to Nick Johnson, extra point was good, with the Mounties leading 14-7 with 11:53 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Rams would intercept the ball a few plays later with Gavin Ryan racing 30 yards for the Penns Valley go ahead touchdown, extra point was no good by Ty Watson, with 7:34 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Philipsburg was forced to punt after just three plays, and Hunter Lyons burst through the line to block the punt, recovering the ball on the 12 yard line. On the next play, Penns Valley’s Jackson Romig would find Miles Brooks in the endzone for a Rams touchdown, a two point conversion attempt was good with Penns Valley now leading 28-14 with 4:52 left in the half.

The Mounties wouldn’t settle for that score, coming right back and driving down the field, scoring on a 1 yard scamper by Ben Gustkey, extra point was no good, Penns Valley 28 Philipsburg 20 with 5 seconds left in the half. Penns Valley took a knee to end the half.

With the teams exchanging touchdowns throughout the first half, fans were likely going to be in for a pretty exciting second half. Philipsburg received the ball in the second half, after deferring at the coin toss. On the first play from scrimmage, Philipsburg’s Ben Gustkey threw an interception to Zack Braucht, but the Ram would be unable to move the ball turning the ball over on downs. Neither team could find any momentum to move the ball after 2 fumbles by Penns Valley and and an interception by Malachi Thompson with the 3rd quarter running out.

The Mounties went on the move in the 4th quarter, trying to close the gap on this close game, but Penns Valley’s Ty Watson would put a stop to the drive with an interception, returning to the 17 yard line. Watson put the game away on the next play, racing 83 yards for a Penns Valley touchdown. Extra point was good by Ty Watson, with 49 seconds remaining in the game, it was Penns Valley 35 Philipsburg 20.

That would be your final score of this very exciting game. Speaking with Head Coach Marty Tobias after the game, he said that “turnovers and constant hustle and effort on every play were a big key to this game. Multiple sacks by Penns Valley defensive lineman Scott Hess was also big.” As we touched on what this 300th win in Penns Valley Football History meant, Coach Tobias said that “it was definitely special for the players and quite an accomplishment for the football program.” Penns Valley Travels to Bald Eagle next week, while Philipsburg travels to Moshanon Valley.
