The 2019 Mountain League Champion Penns Valley Rams

It’s been a long time coming. The Penns Valley Rams have never won a title in the Mountain League, until tonight.

The Rams offense had six plays of 30 or more yards as it ran all over Tyrone, 62-14 Friday night at Gray Memorial Field.

Triggerman Aaron Tobias passed for 435 yards and five touchdowns as he completed 17 of 26 passes against the Golden Eagles. He also ran for 57 yards and a pair of scores as Penns Valley rolled up 597 yards in total offense.“We don’t like to run him often but when it’s needed we can do that,’’ said Ram coach Martin Tobias.

Tyrone had scored with 3 seconds left in the first half to cut the deficit to 21-7 and the Golden Eagles were to receive the second half kickoff, but Penns Valley perfectly executed an on-sides kick, recovering the all at the Tyrone 44. Three plays later

Aaron Tobias connected with Logan Snyder for a27-yard score the Rams were on their way to a rout. “That on-sides kick was important,’’ said Martin Tobias. “They had scored right there at the end of the half and they had some momentum. If they get the ball in the second half and score then we’re in a real fight. You never can count Tyrone out.’’

The Golden Eagles lost quarterback Brandon Lucas and wide receiver Damon Gripp to injuries during the game but coach John Franco wasn’t blaming the loss on them being out of the lineup. “I’ve never had a team let down like we did in the second half,’’ he said. “That’s unacceptable. That’s not traditional tough Tyrone football That’s on me‘’

Penns Valley scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away and run their record to 8-1. The Rams are scheduled to receive a forfeit from Philipburg-Osceola Friday but there is a possibility they could find an opponent to fill the spot.

“There are some possibilities,’’ Martin Tobias said. “We’ll know either later tonight or tomorrow morning.’’

The community of Penns Valley was very excited and gave the team a Champions welcome home, with the Millheim fire company leading the way and the local fire companies escorting them back to the school for a short celebration to honor the team and seniors.
