Last Meeting: 9/28/2019 Richland 42 @ Westmont 6

The Richland Rams took another step towards a fourth straight D6 2A title with a convincing 49-14 win over host Westmont on senior day. When you play Westmont you know they are going to run the ball and attempt to limit your possessions. The Rams solved this problem by scoring on their first seven possessions and letting the clock run out on their eighth from inside the Hilltoppers five yard line.

Westmont got the ball first and drove 75 yards in just under eight minutes before losing the ball on a fumble at the Ram five yard line. The drive was aided by two personal fouls and an offside penalty on fourth and five. Richland went 95 yards in just over in minute, scoring on a 67 yard run by sophomore Evan McCracken. McCracken added the two pointer to make it 8-0 at the 3:02 mark.

Westmont went three and out and punted. A block in the back forced the Rams to start at their own 30. The Rams would go 70 yards in three and a half minutes, overcoming two more penalties. Senior quarterback Kellan Stahl hit senior wideout Griffin LaRue on a 14 yard slant for the touchdown. The two pointer failed and it was 14-0 at the 9:43 mark of the second. Westmont would get on the scoreboard with a 67 yard drive that took over five and a half minutes. The Hilltoppers overcame a fourth down conversion and a sack before a 63 yard pass from Eli Thomas to Gavin Hockenberry put them first and goal from the one. Three plays later, sophomore fullback Brayden Dean crashed into the end zone to cut the lead in half. Richland got the score back, two plays and 48 seconds later. Stahl threw his second touchdown of the game, a beautiful touch pass to junior Grayden Lewis who raced 59 yards untouched for the score. Westmont loss the ball on a fumble on their next play leading to the final score of the first half. Lewis and Stahl teamed up on the next play for a 45 yard touchdown but a procedure penalty canceled the score. A minute later Stahl hit Sam Penna for a touchdown and it was 28-7. Westmont ran out the half.

The Rams got the ball to start the third quarter and scored again.  The drive went 80 yards in two and a half minutes. Lewis and Stahl hooked up for a second time. Westmont took four and a half minutes off the clock by were stopped on a fourth down. Richland struggled on offensive for the first time all day, overcoming two holding calls and a fourth and three. It took the Rams four and a half minutes to go 55 yards for their sixth touchdown. Lewis scored his third touchdown from a yard out. The mercy rule started with 39 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Westmont would complete two passes to start the fourth quarter. Dean caught a 31 yard pass and dragged the entire Ram secondary to the Richland 4. Three plays later Dean scored his second touchdown of the day. The drive was aided by a facemask penalty. It took Richland 1 play to score. Lewis ran around and thru the entire Westmont team on a great 60 yard run. Westmont would take over five minutes off the clock before turning it over on downs. The Ram backups would thmarched inside the five before letting the clock run out. The final 42-14 Rams!
