State College Gets Statement Win at Central Dauphin, 35-28

State College entered Friday night’s game coming off of a heartbreaking loss against Harrisburg 6 days prior and missing large portions of both their offensive and defensive line. Central Dauphin came into the game off a blowout win against Altoona and looking within striking distance of Harrisburg and State College. The game would feature two of the top three passing leaders in the Mid-Penn, Tommy Friberg and Noah Hoffman, along with a historically dominant defense.

In his second week being the focal back of the State College offense, Dresyn Green had a tough task ahead of him against the top 3 linebackers in tackling in the MidPenn. Despite the lack of experience earlier in the season, Green led State High scoring two touchdowns in the 35-28 victory over Central Dauphin, including a 62-yard screen pass with excellent blocking to tie the game at 7 late in the second quarter. “I feel like I have more experience on the field,” Green said “I played for Varsity in my freshman year and didn’t get much playing time, but now I’m really liking it, having me be the focal point, it opens up many other spots on the offense.” Green also broke loose later in the 4th quarter to put State High up by two touchdowns, effectively sealing the game.

A key moment in the game came in the middle of the 3rd quarter. With the score 21-14 State High, and both teams offense stalling, Coach Matt Lintal would opt for the risk and call a fake punt on 4th and 2 on thier own 30. Addison Darcy, State High’s Right Tackle, Nose Tackle, and Punter, dropped back and delivered a bullet to Nathan Lusk for a 26 yard pass that would advance an eventual 7-point drive that extended State High’s lead to 14.  “For the past few weeks we’ve planned for that, everything just worked out, Nate was in the right place at the right time.” Darcy explained, “It was a fourth down, the game was iffy either way and it really boosted our momentum”

The State College defense returned to form against a well built offensive line for the Rams. Nathan Lusk and Kevin Kurzinger combined for two sacks, while Tyson Brennan held his own against MidPenn Rushing Runner-Up, Adam Burkhart. It was a change of pace for the defense after the previous week, in which they faced a dynamic, dual-threat rushing attack compared with the Central Dauphin power rushing attack. Safety Tom Bucha spoke on how the Defense adjusted, “This is just punch-you-in-the-mouth football right here, we adjusted really well, defense played well the whole game. We gave up a couple big plays, but we really stepped up when it mattered”

One of those players on the defense that stepped up was Jimmy Manyak. Near the end of the 1st quarter, and the game still tied at 7, the Rams handed the ball off to Tyler Leisher. Tyson Brennan poked the ball loose, and after a bit of commotion, Manyak had his first ever Scoop-and-Score touchdown in football. Manyak explained “At First, it was very confusing. I thought the play was over, and then I realized that no one was going for the ball, so I was like, heck, I’ll pick it up. It was awesome.”

Synopsis: A heartbreaking loss for Central Dauphin on Senior Night will most likely end the Rams postseason hopes with Harrisburg controlling their own destiny. State High gets back in the win column with two weaker opponents on tap in Altoona and Cumberland Valley. For State High, it’s all about getting healthy. State High has only played a game and a half with all of their defensive starters. Logan Leib showed prowess just a week after being thrust into the Left Tackle position, giving the State High offense a spark. The State High offense looks to have a plethora of weapons, it just depends if the blocking is there to allow the magic to happen.

What’s Next?: The Rams will face another high octane offense in Chambersburg while State High will reignite a dormant rivalry at home against Altoona.
