BELLEFONTE -It was a memorable night in Bellefonte’s shiny new Rogers Stadium.
First, the stadium, finally finished after two years, showed it was worth the wait with all of its amenities finally in place.
Then there was the return of the 1999 team, which won a District 6 championship under the guidance of Coach Tom Gravish. The team was honored before the game.
But what most fans will remember was the performance turned in by Jersey Shore quarterback Tanner Lorson, who accounted for all eight of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns, four through the air, four on the ground. Lorson ran 18 times for 113 yards and completed 15 of 27 passes for 212 yards.
“Tanner stated to come into his own toward the end of last year,’’ said Gravish, who is now the head coach at Jersey Shore. “He had a good basketball season – he’s a point guard – and then he had a good off-season. He did a nice job tonight. He made some plays.’’
And he didn’t wait long to start making them,
The Bulldogs came out in a hurry-up offense and Lorson marched them 69 yards in seven plays, the last 20 coming on a pass from Lorson to Stanton Westlin with 10:07 on the clock in the first quarter
Lorson then hit Catden Hess from 35 yards out at the 3:25 mark of the quarter.
“We weren’t’ able to play fast like that for the lst two years,’’ Gravish said. “But we’ve been playing around with it since January. Our guys are in good shape and Tanner played really well. He moved the sticks.’’
The game turned into a shoot-out in the secnd quarter as Bellefonte got three scores as CJ Funk scored from the 1, Isaiah Nadolsky caught an 8-yard passs from Ethan Rossman and Jalen Emel scored from the 10 as the Tribe drew within a touchdown, 28-21, before the half and tied the score early in the third when Rossman connected with Mason Gray to tie it at 28-28 at the9:51 mark of the third quarter.
But a pair of bad snaps on punts gave the Bulldogs great field position and Lorson took advantage as he threw for another touchdown and ran for three more to blow the game open.
