Bedford Bison(2-0) @ Westmont Hilltoppers(2-0)
Last Meeting August 23, 2019 Bedford 22-8

Sometimes stats lie. That was the case Saturday afternoon in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Bedford Bison had the ball for only 3 minutes and 52 seconds in the first half. Westmont had it for 20 minutes and 8 seconds and yet they trailed 21-0 at the break. Westmont received the opening kickoff at their own 20 after a touchback. They ran 6 times for 27 yards and two first downs before punting. Sometimes one player can change a game. Bison senior Steven Ressler was that player. He returned the punt to the Bedford 47. The Bison’s first play was a 48 yard pass from junior quarterback Mercury Swaim to Ressler. If the ball hadn’t been under thrown it would have been a touchdown. Ressler got his touchdown on the next play, a 5 yard run around the right side. Lizzy Martz added the point after and it was 7-0 Bison.(16 seconds) Westmont fumbled the following kickoff at their own 29 and Bedford recovered. Bedford however would manage only 1 yard in four plays and 30 seconds before turning it over on downs. The Hilltoppers would run three plays, getting the ball to the 32. Ressler made another play returning the punt to the Westmont 34. Sometimes a team has more then one game changing player. Mercury Swaim is one of those players. It took him 11 seconds and one play to run around and thru the Westmont defense to make it 14-0. Westmont started their next drive at their own 14. Three plays later it was 4th and two from their own 22. Rolling the dice the Hilltoppers went for it and senior running back Hudson Holbay fought for the first down by inches. The victory was short lived after a short run and two incomplete passes, Westmont punted the ball back to Bedford. Ressler had another great punt return but a block in the back bought it back to the Bison 32. Three plays later, Bedford crossed midfield on a Swaim to Ressler pass. Bedford now decided to go for touchdown, but a great inception by Hilltoppers senior Alex Ray stopped the threat.(1 minute 42 seconds)Westmont starting at it’s own 26 used up the next 8 and a half minutes. The Hilltoppers ran 11 times for 3 first downs before completing their first pass for a loss of 13 yards. Westmont punted the ball out of bound to keep it away from Ressler. The Bison using their two minute offense went 74 yards in 9 plays for their third touchdown and a 21-0 lead with just over a minute to go in the half. Bedford threw six passes and their third run was a 9 yard touchdown by junior running back Trenton Price. (1 minute 13 seconds) Westmont ran three plays and the half ended.
Bedford’s Ethan Weber returned the second half kickoff to the Westmont 39, nearly going all the way but was caught from behind. The Bison drove 39 yards in eight plays(7 runs, 1 pass) taking 4 minutes 58 seconds. That was more possession then they had the entire first half. Swaim scored his second touchdown on a three yard run and Bedford led 28-0. Westmont would now go on one of the longest non scoring drives I have ever seen. Starting at their own 20, the Hilltoppers drove 79 yards to the Bison 1. The 19 play (18 runs, 1 pass) drive took 12 minutes and 16 seconds. The pass was a 13 yard completion that gave Westmont a total of 0 yards passing for the game. Westmont converted two fourth downs before being stopped on 4th and one from the Bison 1. Bedford would run three plays for seven yards before fumbling at their own 8. (1 minute 12 seconds) Both teams put in their back ups for he final five minutes. Westmont‘ second team faired no better then their starters, gaining 6 yards in 4 plays before turning the ball over on downs. The Bison second team ran five plays using up the final three minutes and 14 seconds. (2nd half 9 minutes 24 seconds total 13 minutes 16 seconds)
