The Golden Eagles of Tyrone soared into the District 6 Class 2A title game with a hard fought 20-14 win over Penn Cambria tonight. Tyrone wide receiver Damon Gripp led the Eagles with 227 yards of receiving on 10 catches with one TD reception. “These kids have never, the seniors here, have never been in a playoff game” said Tyrone Head Coach John Franco. “We’re trying to change this program, we’re trying to get this program back to where we were.”

It was the Panthers that jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Jake Tsikalas stepped in front of a Brandon Lucas pass who returned the ball to the Tyrone 7 yard line. Several plays later Garrett Harrold plowed in from 5 yards out.

Tyrone had a chance to even the score when Gripp made his first big reception, a 32 yard reception to put the ball at the Panther 10, but Tyrone failed to capitalize when Lucas was picked off by Brandon Storm, his first of two inteceptions. Both teams exchanged punts until, with 2:50 left in the first half, Lucas when in from 1 yard out.  The 9 play 90 yard drive was aided with two big receptions by Gripp, one for 11 and the second for 47 yards to put the ball at the Penn Cambria 12. (both plays in twitter link below).

Gampe gets after Harrold

Coming out in the second half, Tyrone’s offense got rolling but it was the defense that really stepped up, harassing Harrold the entire half and keeping the potent Panther offense on it’s heels. Matt Clifton registered 4 1/2 sacks and defensive end Ross Gampe got a couple sacks of his own. “We just wanted it, we knew what we had to do and our coverage gave us time to get to the quarterback in the second half” said Clifton.

Tyrone took the lead with another long drive capped by a very nice 29 yard td reception from Lucas. The kicked failed leaving the score 13-7 at the 4:13 mark in the third quarter.

Clifton stopped the next Penn Cambria drive with a fourth down sack, giving the Eagles the ball at their 26. The Lucas/Gripp air show continued on the ensuing drive with Gripp hauling in a 43 yard pass getting to the Panther 14 where Lucas finished the drive with a 6 yard td run. “That’s the best passing team that we’ve faced until next week” said Franco, ” and we know how good they are. For a team like that, to shut that passing game down, that’s something.”

Penn Cambria battled back on the next drive.  Harrold took the ball in from the 1 to pull the Panthers with 6.

The Panthers had two more opportunities to score but the Golden Eagle defense was stifling. “Two good teams out there. I think our football team earned some respect. They made more plays than we did, but it just wasn’t our night tonight” said Penn Cambria Head Coach Nick Felus. “We’re excited about the future of Penn Cambria football.”

Tyrone will face Central @ Mansion Park on Oct 31 – 7:00 pm. For Penn  Cambria, they will look to fill the rest of their allotted schedule with three more opponents.
