Lions pull away late to beat Dragons!

I expected a very low scoring game and it was 0-0 after one quarter before it turned into a scoring battle. The Dragons punted on each of their first three possessions. The Lions threw incomplete on fourth down on their first drive and punted on their next two possessions.

The Dragons scored on their first possession of the second quarter when senior Victor Bartlebaugh ran around the left end, cut back and raced 58 yards for a touchdown. The kick was wide and PL led 6-0. The Lions went 59 yards in just over two minutes to take the lead. Shaydon Oleksa scored from 21-yards out and Conner Riffer’s kick made it 7-6 UV.

Purchase Line was forced to punt on their next possession and the Lions blocked the punt. The Dragons struggled all night with high snaps and UV took advantage. Quarterback Dmitri Worthington capped the 53-yard drive with a 1 yard sneak and UV led 14-6. The Dragons got another big run from Victor on their next possession as he raced 50 yards before fumbling in the red zone, an alert Seth Frantz picked up the fumble in stride and was tackled at the Lions five. Victor would score on a fourth and two. He would tie the game with a two point conversion. The Lions who had only 13.9 seconds, were able to get into field goal position but Riffer missed from 46 yards out as the half ended.

The Lions started the second half with the ball, Oleksa would score his second TD of the game on a fourth and five from the PL five. The Dragon would take the lead on their next drive. Victor would capped the drive after a Matthew Johnston 60-yard run. He would convert the two point conversion and PL was up 22-21. Logan Lichtenfels would score on the last play of the fourth quarter. The Lions would never trail after this touchdown. Lichtenfels, who had a strong defensive game was in for an injured Oleksa.

The Dragons three fourth quarter possessions resulted in a punt , interception and a turn over on downs. Nate Szymusiak would score after the first two possessions and the Lions would run out the clock after the third.

The game featured only 40 yards in passing by both teams combined. The teams combined for over 650 yards on the ground. Victor, Szymusiak and Oleksa all had over 100 yards rushing and at least two touchdowns. There was only 1 turnover, Brendan James intercepted a PL in the fourth quarter.
