What’s happening in District 5 & 6: Mid Season review

Let’s take a look at Districts 5 & 6 at the midway point of the season:

We’ll start off with Centre County teams where Penns Valley and Bellefonte records just keep falling. Rams QB Aaron Tobias woke up Sunday morning as the states leading passer with over 1,600 yards through the air and 20 tds. Penns Valley is off to an expected great start for the year. One of Tobias’ top targets is tight end Logan Snyder who broke the county record with 138 career receptions.

Bellefonte running back CJ Funk has passed Jon condo on the county career rushing list with 2,847 yards. His 43 tds and 258 points put his 6th on the county list in those categories. Bellefonte’s win over Tyrone was a first in some respects; it was Bellefonte’s first ever win over a John Franco coached team after going 0-17 against his teams. It was also the programs 500th win. They face a tough Clearfield from district 9 this week.

Jesse Nagle’s Bald Eagles are back to full health after losing three of their top players. Matty Reese, Jaden Jones and Gage McClenahan are all back this week. The Eagles sit atop the Class 3A District 6 standings.  Shout out to David Weaver of Philipsburg-Osceola. David was taken via ambulance on Friday night but is home resting and getting better each day.

In the ICC, District 5 Tussey Mt and District 6 Bellwood Antis lead the way at 5-0. Tussey coach Anthony Sottasante likes the position his team is in. We’ll see what they have this week as 4-1 Juniata Valley comes to town.  Another key game comes on October 18 when the Blue Devils travel to Tussey. A nice surprise in the ICC is Claysburg-Kimmel. The Bulldogs are sitting at 4-1, their only loss coming to Tussey. Don’t count out Garry Black’s Panthers who are 3-1. This is a fast, scrappy and well disciplined team that could make some noise.

In the Laurel Highlands, Bedford, Richland and Chestnut Ridge sit atop the league at 5-0 with the Marauders of Bishop Guilfoyle sitting right with them at 4-1. Bedford is playing good football right now as is Richland. These teams all bang helmets in the next few weeks as the scheduling Gods have loaded the back end of their schedules. We won’t know who the leader of this league is until the last week of the season.

The Heritage leader hasn’t changed in the last few years. Ligonier Valley leads the way at 5-0. The Rams should chug to an undefeated regular season with their only possible challenge coming on October fourth as they face a surprising 4-1 Marion Center. The Stingers only loss came to 4-1 Homer Center. The Wildcats are back after a down year following their state title appearance a couple years ago. Their schedule has them looking at winning out heading into the Heritage/WestPac crossover series.

Speaking of the WestPac, Berlin is on a tear. Their 21-13 win over Portage has them in control of their own destiny but first they have to take down a Meyersdale team on October 4th that is also playing very good football as was expected in the preseason. The Red Raiders have a tougher schedule in the second half of the season with both Berlin and Portage waiting in the wings.

That’s your mid season District’s 5 & 6 report. Good luck to all!
