In a showdown for the second playoff spot in the Tri-County South, the Avella Eagles shut down Carmichaels to clinch a playoff berth. Avella has been the story of the season out of the Tri-County South and their story will get another chapter next week in the WPIAL playoffs. Led by Tanner Terensky and a stout defense, the Eagles pulled out a 14-7 on senior night.

“Coming into the season nobody expected anything out of this team and I think we really surprised some people and opened some eyes this year” said Head Coach Ryan Cecchini following the win.

The Eagles definitely turned heads around the WPIAL tonight, shutting down a powerful Carmichaels offense who had come into Friday’s contest averaging more than 30 points. Avella showed early on it wasn’t going to be intimidated. Avella’s defense was able to impose its will early and clogged the running lanes for the Mikes. Neither team would score in the first frame, as both defenses played well early.

Avella opened the scoresheet early on in the second period on a Noah Markle touchdown run. On the ensuing drive for Carmichaels, a strip sack gave possession back to Avella well into Mike territory. Avella would not be able to convert however and would give it back to the Mikes. On their next possession the Eagles found the endzone. KJ Rush found Tanner Terensky in the right corner of the endzone to push the lead to 14-0 heading into the break.

Following homecoming halftime festivities, Carmichaels answered back shortly after the second half began. Senior Bailey Jones scampered 66 yards untouched to the house. Cutting the Avella lead in half, 14-7.

This would be it in terms of scoring in the ball game, but there was plenty of drama left. The defenses traded stop after stop until late in the 4th quarter. Carmichaels found themselves in the redzone with a little over 5 minutes to play. The Eagle defense bent but didn’t break, and on 4th and goal from the 15, Tanner Terensky would jump a pass on a trick play and return it close to midfield.

Avella was unable to put the game away and gave the Mighty Mikes one last chance. As they did all night long, the Eagles defense held when it mattered and would finish off the upset and punched their ticket to the postseason.
