Belle Vernon set the tone of the game early on in their 45-0 victory against West Mifflin. They scored on 3 of their first 4 possessions. A big return on the opening kick setup the first score of the game. Dane Anden returned the kick down to the West Mifflin 13 yard line. 2 plays later Jackson Jewell connected with Anden for a 4 yard touchdown. “We were due for a nice little return there, last week we were very close a couple times” said Coach Humbert.
On West Mifflin’s first possession they went 3 and out. Belle Vernon wasted no time extending their lead when Devin Whitlock returned the punt 55 yards making it 14-0 with 9:22 in the first quarter.
West Mifflin didn’t have much going on offense in the game tonight. Their second and third possessions were both 3 and out. On the third they missed a good opportunity after Belle Vernon turned the ball over on downs. Belle Vernon’s defense stood tall on that drive and in the game as well. “Very characteristic to last year, it really was a very similar performance, we were sound at the line of scrimmage, linebackers were swarming, playing fast, and that’s really what you need against a team like that” said Coach Humbert.
After West Mifflin’s third possession, Belle Vernon got the ball back and started at their own 14 yard line. It was a long drive that ended with a touchdown. It was capped off by a Jake Haney 5 yard run.
West Mifflin again got the ball back and went 3 and out yet again. Belle Vernon started off with decent field position at their own 46 yard line. The drive was finished off when Devin Whitlock connected with Quinton Martin for a 9 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 26-0
Belle Vernon used 2 quarterbacks in the game which made it difficult to defend them. “Devin’s the guy, but Jewell is a solid guy as well, and I think Devin does a lot for us in the run game, so with that I gotta make sure Jackson is ready and the neat thing is they’re very similar, I think it is easier for me to rotate them a little bit more because they’re both very similar and they both performed very well” said Coach Humbert.
Whitlock was 9 of 12 for 79 yards passing and had a big run which was 33 yards. Jewell was 6 of 6 passing for 37 yards and had a little over 100 all purpose yards.
Belle Vernon added one more touchdown before the half making it 32-0. The second half was more of the same, Belle Vernon added 2 more scores making the final 45-0. West Mifflin came very close to scoring at the end but that drive ended with an interception.
Next week is the big game for Belle Vernon when they travel to Thomas Jefferson. “We’re just excited” said Coach Humbert.
