It was expected to be a big time matchup between Bethel Park and Mars but it was Bethel Park that rolled to an easy 49-13 victory
Mars got the ball to start the game and they marched right down the field. It only took 2 plays to get into Bethel Park territory and eventually Mars got on the board when Luke Goodworth found Mason Childress on a 24 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 7-0 Mars with 9:18 in the first quarter.
Bethel Park started their first drive at their own 25 yard line. After three straight runs they punted the ball away back to Mars. After that Mars also had a three and out.
Bethel Park started their second drive at their own 48 yard line. On the first play Tanner Pfeuffer found Mitchell Paschl for a 52 yard touchdown pass which made the score 7-6 Mars with 5:38 in the first quarter. Pfeuffer played a key role in the win he was 7 of 11 for 120 yards.
The next drive for Mars was looking like a good one they marched right down the field after getting inside the Bethel Park 5 yard line they went for it on fourth down and Bethel Park came up with a huge goal line stand.
After the goal line stand Bethel Park started on their own 1 yard line. The big play of the drive was a 63 yard run by David Dennison down to the Mars 7 yard line. Ja’Vaughn Moore finished off the drive on a 7 yard run which gave Bethel Park a 13-7 lead with 10:57 in the second quarter.
That goal line stand and score was certainly a turning point in the game. “That area is an area we work on every Monday in practice, is kind of like the way we start our week with low red zone, high red zone and goal line situations, we got to see that situation practiced during the week play out there, a major swing in where we were at, we knew that we had to make a play early in the game to extend this to where we wanted it to be we didn’t know whether that was going to be a second quarter play, or a third quarter play and that was right around when the second quarter started” said Coach Peckich.
Mars went three and out on their next drive and punted the ball back to Bethel Park. They wasted no time extending their lead on a 79 yard run by Ja’Vaughn Moore. He was the key player for Bethel Park. He had 11 carries for 195 yards in the first half. “Ja’Vaughn is a great player, the beautiful thing about us is we’re a very balanced operation, Ja’Vaughn has really came into his own” said Coach Peckich.
On the next Mars drive they got into Bethel Park territory but turned the ball over on downs. Once again it was another quick strike and Ja’Vaughn Moore’s third of the game this one being 58 yards. “We came to play, they came to play to, nobody thought we were going to win, everybody thought they were going to get 42 on us, the bare minimum they thought we were going to have was 35, nobody bet on us, but we bet on ourself and we came to play” said Moore. That 58 yard run made it 27-7 Bethel Park with 6:31 in the second quarter.
Before the first half ended Bethel Park added one more touchdown when David Dennison scored on a 7 yard run. He also had a big game with 142 yards rushing. Before the first half ended Mars added a score when Luke Goodworth found Mason Childress for a second time this time a 35 yard pass. That made the score at halftime 35-13 Bethel Park.
The second was more of the same. Later on in the third quarter. Bethel Park extended their lead on a 3 yard run by Tanner Pfeuffer making the score 42-13 Bethel Park.
In the fourth quarter Bethel Park put the Mercy Rule into effect on a David Dennison 28 yard run making the final score 49-13 Bethel Park.
Bethel Park improves to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Armstrong next week. Mars falls to 1-1 on the season and will host North Hills next week.
