Business as usual. Bishop Canevin wraps up senior night with a 40-0 drubbing of Black Hills rival OLSH in WPIAL Championship rematch.

“It felt great. We knew it was going to be like this,” Xavier Nelson said of the win “There was a lot of internet talk between the two teams. We knew what it was. They don’t really have much depth, and were really deep. We just had a good game plan for em.”

It didn’t take long for Bishop Canevin. The Crusaders in 2022 have been a team that has been criticized for slow starts, but dominating performances once getting going. Bishop Canevin would be held to a three and out on the opening drive, but that would be the last time they would be stopped until the third quarter.

Xavier Nelson, chasing the 1000 yard mark on the season going into the game with 899, would be the first to strike. Jason Cross found Nelson with a step and a half on the defender for a 40 yard catch on the first play of the Crusaders second drive.

Another three and out later, and the Crusaders proved their mettle in the running game. Marquis Carter would set up the Crusaders in the red zone before Azjuan Marshall churned his way into the endzone to add to the lead a play later .

On the Crusaders next drive, Jason Cross and Jayden Lindsey would avoid turning the ball over on downs when a 40 yard pass on 4th and 14 set up BC near the goal line. Three plays later, Jason Cross made the Chargers pay.

Already up by 21, the BC defense made quick work of a Chargers offense missing WPIAL passing runner up Nehemiah Azeem. On the punt, Xavier Nelson ran it back 67 yard, weaving and spinning around defenders. A botched snap on the extra point kept the score at 27-0.

“I was just seeing a lot of open space. My teammates all made blocks. It made it easy for me,” Nelson said.

Nine minutes later, the Crusaders once again added to their lead. Jason Cross scampered in for seven more to make the score 34-0. Already, the Crusaders were up by 5 scores before the Chargers had even got a first down.

The Chargers offense, hampered by the loss of their all-WPIAL QB Azeem to a pregame injury, finally got their first first down in the third quarter. OLSH Lineback Brandon Brazell took his first snap under center and willed his way down the sideline for the Chargers. Unfortunately, OLSH would turn it over on downs in every drive following, leaving a goose egg on the scoreboard when the final horn sounded.

“I was kinda confused when we didn’t see him at first, we were gameplanning for him all week and he just didn’t end up playing,” Nelson said of Azeem “I wish we would have beat them at their best but a win is still a win.”

What’s Next: The Crusaders will head to Carlynton next week to wrap up the regular season slate while OLSH returns home to host Cornell.

“It feels amazing to be conference champions, that was our main goal, and now we’re getting ready for playoffs.”
