Bobbie Boyd Jr. and McKeesport Defense Stuff Belle Vernon in 14-6 Win

Friday night featured a showdown for the ages. Two of the best running back in the entire state of western Pennsylvania, Bobbie Boyd Jr. of McKeesport and Quinton Martin of Belle Vernon.

In 2021, the Tigers and the Leopards met in the final week of the regular season to decide the 4A Big Eight conference crown. In that match, the Leopards flexed their speed and athleticism with a 46-14 statement.

Even in the very first drive it became clear that things would finish the same as a year ago in 2022. Following a McKeesport fumble on the third play of the game, the McKeesport defense stuffed the Belle Vernon offense on the Tigers 18 and took over on downs.

On the next play, Bobbie Boyd Jr. made a statement. The Tigers running back juked, weaved, and spun his way down the field all the way to the endzone, where before crossing the goal line his helmet was torn off. Two plays later from the 6, Boyd cashed in on his big run.

From then on the story was the Tigers defense. A punt return TD by Boyd early in the second quarter would be called back, however late before the end of the half, Boyd took a pass away from Leopards QB Braden Laux, and went sideline to sideline for the Pick six to take the Tigers up by two scores.

The Tigers defense continued the momentum in the 3rd and final quarters, only allowing the Leopards to cross the 50 yard line once. That once came with 3:09 left in the ballgame, when Braden Laux heaved one to Chase Ruokenen who took it 92 yards to pull the Leopards back within a score.

The play of the game came on the kickoff following, where the Leopards attempted an onside kick. The Leopards came up with the ball, however the Refs ruled that the ball was touched by a Belle Vernon teammate before being recovered.

The Leopards would get the ball back with 31 seconds left on their own 9, but Bobbie Boyd Jr. put his final stamp on the contest. Boyd Jr. would catch a heave by Laux to notch his second interception of the night, and a 3-0 record for the Tigers.

What’s Next: The Tigers head to Laurel Highlands to take on another highly rated local talent to open conference play while the Leopards host Penn Trafford for the second season in a row.
