Alex Conrad (#16,wearing red) looks to make a run away from Brownsville’s Patrick Shumar (#66, wearing white)

The game had no real impact on the playoff picture. Charleroi got in the playoffs last week since Brownsville lost to Frazier and the Falcons, coming into tonight’s battle are 2-6 in the conference. Even with that stated, this game still must be played. The final score of this Century Conference matchup was 63-0 in favor of Charleroi and here is how the Cougars dominated.
The Cougars wasted no time in putting the first points up on the board as Charleroi forced Brownsville to fumble and freshman lineman Joshua Rodbaugh fell on top of it.
They now are in good field position at the Brownsville 33-yard line. Senior quarterback Alex Conrad found fellow senior Dominic Pellegrini for a touchdown. Joey Caruso landed the PAT so the score is now 7-0 Cougars.
Brownsville was a little more successful on this drive as they would pick up a couple of first downs, thanks to the help of junior running back Daniel Grant. I asked Falcons head coach Scott Fichter, in his opinion, who has stepped up in the locker room and who has emerged as a leader for this struggling team and he said,
“I think the leader that stepped up would be Daniel Grant…He’s a kid that you want 50 of him. He’s a model student, does what’s right, works as hard as any kid that I’ve ever seen…”
Even with the work of Grant, the drive resulted in a turnover on downs.
Charleroi gets the ball at their own 36 with 4:25 left to play in the first quarter. The Cougars drove the field until they got to the Falcon six and Conrad found senior wide receiver, Legend Davis. I was able to have a few words with Davis after the game, but that will come later in the article.
The score at the end of the 1st was 14-0, Charleroi. That score was about to get a whole lot bigger for one side.
Alex Conrad may be known for his quarterbacking abilities, but he also plays a nice defensive game as well, as he was able to intercept the ball and run it back for a 56-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Joey Caruso made good on the PAT to make it a 21-0 game.
Brownsville was forced to punt on the following drive, giving the ball back to the Cougars.
The first play of the drive, Charleroi scored with the assistance of senior running back Brayden Mihalcin. Caruso is good. The score is 28-0.
The Falcons, again, had to punt the ball away as their offense struggled to get any sort of momentum.
Charleroi was back at it again. On their own 34-yard line. Conrad targetted Davis but it fell incomplete. He would make it up however with a quick screen pass turning into a 66-yard touchdown. With Caruso’s kick, it was now 35-0, Cougars.
Brownsville got the ball back at their own 30. After a couple of penalties were called on them, they now faced a 1st and 30 on the 10-yard line. The Falcons were unable to overcome this, so the ball was punted.
Just as it looked like the Cougars were going to add to their lead, they fumbled the ball on the Falcons 3-yard line and it was recovered by junior lineman Leonard Harris.
Maybe the Falcons could finally turn their misfortune around and make something big happen. Unfortunately, this would not be the time or game as Brownsville fumbled the ball on their 5-yard line and it was recovered by Charleroi’s Mario Celaschi.
With that fumble recovery for the Cougars, Mihalcin punched in one last touchdown and Caruso made one last PAT before the half was over. 42-0 in favor of the Cougars.
To start the second half off, Charleroi scored on their first play. Mihalcin would get the touchdown, but senior Evan McGuire was able to put them in great field position by returning the kickoff all the to the Brownsville 18-yard line.
After another 3 and out drive for the Falcons and now facing a 4th and 16, they had to punt.
Charleroi’s McGuire would chip in on the scoreboard for his team with a 7-yard rushing touchdown. Caruso made it 56-0.
The Falcons were once again punting the ball away after a failed offensive show. To add more salt to the wound, Charleroi’s Legend Davis ended up returning that punt for a touchdown. 57 yards to be exact.
I got to have a few words with Davis after the game. I asked him how he felt about being one of the best players in the WPIAL 2A. He seemed very surprised and shocked that I said that. He said,
“That’s a big statement, but if that were true, I’d say it’s surreal and I’m very thankful”
A little backstory, tonight was Charleroi’s senior night, meaning this was the last game these players would play in Myron Pottios Stadium. I asked him how he felt about that.
“It’s very sad. Honestly, sickning. I honestly can’t believe it. I love these guys and I just hope they are having the most memorable night as I did.”
Brownsville will play the last game of their season at home versus Carmichaels. Charleroi travels to play their last regular-season game at Apollo-Ridge.
