Game Preview: WPIAL Class 3A Championships: Avonworth (12-0) vs. Imani Christian Academy (12-0)

This coming Saturday in Acrisure Stadium, the WPIAL Class 3A has an opportunity to be the closest, best game of the WPIAL Championship weekend. Both teams are averaging 40+ points per game, allowing less than eight and have scored 100 or more points this season.

Avonworth 12-0 (6-0)

The Antelopes come into the contest not only not having lost any game this season, but until last week not allowing more than 14 points in a game. Avonworth held seven of their 10 total opponents to seven or less points in their games. That list of teams does include Central Valley, Freeport and Aliquippa. 

Senior quarterback Carson Bellinger has passed for 1,900+ yards this season with 26 TDs and only one interception this season. 

The Antelopes also have two players in Luca Neal and Jaden Jones who have rushed for 600+ yards and Dimitri Velisaris who has almost 1,500 receiving yards this season. Velisaris and Neal have combined for roughly 32 of the teams total TDs. 

Avonworth with the number one overall seed in the Class 3A bracket and had a first round bye. They then went on to face the number eight seeded Freeport Yellow Jackets. The Antelopes beat the Yellow Jackets with a final score of 56-7. 

Avonworth then was handed their toughest test of the season against a team they faced in week nine. Avonworth defeated North Catholic 44-24 to get their bid into the WPIAL championship this weekend. 

Imani Christian Academy 12-0 (6-0)

The Saints put together an undefeated season this year themselves in a fashion where the most points they allowed in a single game was 16 (vs North Catholic 36-16). Imani has put together four shutouts this season and three other games where their opponents scored only seven points. 

Junior quarterback Gabe Jenkins passed for nearly 1,700+ yards this season and 29 passing touchdowns to go along with it. Jenkins also led the Saints in rushing yards this season putting up almost 1,400 yards on the ground and 14 rushing touchdowns as well. David Davis and Robert Torres-Johnson both received 400+ yards this season averaging well over 20+ yards a catch. Three other players had over 100 yards receiving as well. 

The Saints had a similar route to the championship like the Antelopes. 

The Saints were the number two overall seed in Class 3A having a first round bye, then facing off against Hopewell and Central Catholic winning with a combined score of 76-16. 

Overall

WPIAL Class 3A is slated for what could be the best matchup of not just Saturday, but all six championship games as well. Either way this game will either be high scoring or low scoring, but nonetheless a close game is expected to be seen. 

Avonworth and Imani Christian kickoff on Saturday Nov. 22 at 5:00 p.m.
