There was a different kind of energy in the air at Spartan Stadium on Friday night. Homecoming weekend brought a big crowd, perfect weather, and a matchup between Hempfield Area and Canon-McMillan that had plenty of fireworks from the opening kickoff.
The Big Macs wasted no time pulling out the tricks. On their opening drive, they converted a fake punt on 4th-and-8 to keep things alive, then capped it off with a huge 38-yard touchdown strike to TJ Sabatucci on a tough 3rd-and-17. The extra point made it 7-0 Canon-McMillan early.
Hempfield answered right back. On just the second play of the next drive, Dominic Detruf hit Troy Sebring for a 55-yard gain, setting up a 4-yard touchdown pass from Detruf to Jack Kopas to tie the game at 7-7. But Canon-McMillan had another trick ready. On the first play of their following drive, they pulled off a perfectly executed double pass that once again found Sabatucci, this time for a 68-yard touchdown — his second score of the quarter — to take a 14-7 lead heading into the second.
That’s when Hempfield flipped the script. The second quarter was all Spartans, as they blanked Canon-McMillan 24-0 and completely seized control of the game. Detruf threw two more touchdown passes — both to Lucas Simmons — and Aidan Stinebiser added a rushing score to send Hempfield into halftime up 31-14.
Canon-McMillan tried to claw back with two field goals in the third quarter, but Hempfield never let the momentum swing. Each team added a touchdown in the fourth, sealing a Homecoming win for the Spartans.
Detruf was locked in all night, completing 27 of 35 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Simmons led the way with six catches for 93 yards and three scores, while Kopas hauled in seven receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Stinebiser carried it 16 times for 72 yards and a score, and Sebring added 119 yards on seven catches. For the Big Macs, Sabatucci accounted for all three touchdowns.
With the 38-27 victory, Hempfield improves to 4-2 and will head to Norwin next week for a matchup of 4-2 teams. Canon-McMillan (3-3) returns home to take on Seneca Valley (2-4)
