The Jayhawks did come to win, and in resounding fashion

Greg Ricupero

On a cool clear night in Westmoreland County the Jeanette Jayhawks overwhelmed and dominated a good Greensburg Central Catholic team 48-14 to set up a winner take all game with Clairton in two weeks to decide the WPIAL 1A Eastern Conference. The Centurions managed only 4 1st half 1st down against a Jayhawk defense which had only allowed 5 touchdowns in 7 games going into tonight’s matchup. After stopping GCC on its 1st drive, the Jayhawks drove 94 yards to take a 7-0 lead. The big play was a 38 yard James Sanders to Kaelan Piscar pass. Senior Imani Sanders capped the drive with a 10 yard TD run with 4:23 to go in the 1st. GCC went 3 and out on their 2nd possession. Once again the Jayhawks mixed the pass with the run and drove deep into Centurion territory but an interception in the end zone stopped the drive. The Centurions again went 3 and out as the 1st quarter ended 7-0 Jeanette.

Jeanette than scored on a 4th and 16 jump ball to 6’4” Bayley Molter in the end zone. The pass covered 27 yards from James Sanders. Derrick Miller added his 2nd extra point and at 10:03 it was 14-0. The game than had its 1st two turnovers on back to back plays. First GCC lost the ball on a sack and than the Jayhawks after a 12 yard reception. GCC faked a punt on 4th and five and was able to get a 1st down, but the drive ended when Toby Cline intercepted a David Altimore pass at the Jayhawk 34 with 5:14 to go in the half. Jeanette scored-in under two minutes the big play was a 34 yard flanker reverse by Jackson Pruitt. Imani Sanders scored his 2nd TD from 1 yard out at 3:31, the kick failed 20-0. The Jayhawks tried an onside kick but it failed. With good field position GCC tried to go for it on 4th and 2 but failed at the Jeanette 44. Jeanette who went no huddle the entire game scored again before the half. The big play was a 38 yard James Sanders to Brett Birch pass. Imani Sanders scored this 3rd TD from 2 yards out with 45 seconds to go in the half. The 2 point conversion failed. The Centurions were intercepted on the last play of the half and went into the lock room down 26-0.

Halftime was passed with Homecoming activities and a nice perform by the Jeanette band.

The 3rd started with Jeanette running the ball at will and moving in for their 5th TD. But a great interception and return of 72 yards by GCC’s Luke Mazowiecki got the home crowd back into the game and the Centurions on the scoreboard. With 9:21 to go in the 3rd it was 26-7. GCC than failed on their own onside kick attempt. Two plays and 29 seconds was all it took for Imani Sanders to score his 4th from 25 yards out. The two point conversion failed and the Jayhawks led 32-7. The Centurions than put their only drive of the game together. The big play was a 31 yard run by Aaron Stasko. GCC scored on a 12 yard pass from Altimore to Joe Blahovek. Nate Ward added his 2nd extra point at 5:54 to make it 32-14. The Jayhawks scored again in just over a minute. Imani Sanders went for 41 yards and later scored from 6 yards, his 5th TD of the game. The 2 point conversion was good and with 4:37 to go in the 3rd it was 40-14. Both teams punted as the 3rd quarter ended.

GCC punted on its 1st possession of the 4th quarter. Twenty -eight seconds later Roberto Smith ran 51 yards for a TD and with the 2 pointer, Jeanette led 48-14 with 9:24 to go. GCC punted and the Jayhawk backups ran the clock out with a long drive and they kneel on the ball inside the Centurions 5 yard line as time expired.

Greensburg Central Catholic (6-2) will need to rebound next week against Cornell or they may not make the playoffs.

Jeanette (8-0)definitely looks like a team who can win it all in class A. They have a lot of weapons on offense and mix the pass and run well. Imani Sanders who is listed as only 5-6 runs like Barry Sanders. The defense swarms to the ball and again was stout allowing only 1 TD.
